The Visit of the Old Lady

In search of a fitting title for this comment, I initially had "the whispered kiss" in mind due to the repeatedly mentioned weak sillage and longevity.

Then I tried to engage in free association. Lipstick Fever…Lippenstift Fieber…and I already had the image of one of those old ladies in mind who feverishly want to keep their younger selves visually alive and sometimes unfortunately overshoot the mark. The following appearance comes to mind: neatly to strikingly poppy dressed, with a blow-dried wave in hair that has more than a slight violet tint and boldly presented makeup. The lips are so heavily made up that their actual outline, due to multiple applications of lipstick and presumably also due to a less steady hand and sharp eye that comes with age, rivals today’s Botox practices.

The eponymous tragicomedy by Friedrich Dürrenmatt was just another step in association, but apart from being the title giver, it plays no further role in this comment.

And I certainly do not mean to imply that "Lipstick Fever" is in any way old-fashioned or outdated.

About the scent:

As a member of the "Lipstick" affinity group here in this forum, I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of my sample ;-) and have read the initial descriptions with great curiosity. After 3 days of personal testing, I can relate to almost all previous comments.

The similarity to "Replica - Lipstick On" is striking in the initial phase of the scent; I would even consider it a twin, although "Lipstick Fever" is, in my opinion, less waxy and a bit less sweet (which I am glad about), but more powdery.

A connection to Malle’s "Lipstick Rose" was also mentioned in a forum thread. The common denominator here, in my opinion, is the violet-powdery-lipstick projection throughout the scent. The Malle differs due to the prominent presence of rose and a vintage charm; both are absent in "Lipstick Fever".

The presented lipstick note is very authentic and quite wonderful at the beginning, but unfortunately, like all lipstick scents, it does not last very long in this form.

I can smell a slightly fruity raspberry at the beginning, but as it develops, I only perceive it as pleasantly light in projection; on my skin, it completely disappears, leaving nothing behind. The scent, when this lipstick-berry note wafts around me, somewhat reminds me of "French Kiss", although that one is much more intense and fruitier.

When I sniff directly on my skin after some time, I can unfortunately no longer perceive any lipstick scent. I then experience it more as a powdery-spicy violet/iris scent, as already described by @Serduszko. Another Guerlain scent came to mind, namely "Cuir Beluga". "Sweet" is only a minor note here, and the scent is absolutely unisex from that point on.

And I can also locate the piercing note described by @Baerlie, although I perceive it more as an unpleasant tickle in my nose.

With the slightly woody note that comes in later, it reminded me more of "Armani Privé - Rose d'Artiste" than "Liquid Illusion". The latter had a quite pronounced synthetic note for me, which, fortunately, does not exist in "Lipstick Fever".

In the projection, I can also perceive something pleasantly creamy from time to time; it smells very well-groomed and like good makeup.

As has often been observed, I can perceive the scent better and longer the more often I wear it. The mini-sprays from the original sample unfortunately do not provide much, and I can imagine that the scent sprayed directly from the bottle or from a pen shows much more substance and longevity.

Overall, I find the scent quite pleasing. It is certainly a pleasant companion that offers different facets around the nose and therefore does not become boring quickly. It beautifully balances between lipstick, slightly berry, powdery-spicy, creamy, and makeup-like. So none of it is new or particularly special (not meant negatively), but if you like these directions, you are probably well served.

To revisit the painted title image: unlike the lovable old lady with her makeup, you can’t really go wrong with this scent.

And considering the appealing red bottle, I can well imagine that the scent will find a place in my collection.

Oh yes, and I will order the lipstick-scented candle "Marilyn Candle" along with it. @Behaviour has made me very curious about that. Maybe it will bring the lasting lipstick wafts that the entire "lipstick faction" here dreams of ;-)

Addendum 2.6.2020: the bottle is very beautiful and high-quality. An extremely fine spray can be dosed. And another nice surprise: the silver writing shines iridescent in rainbow colors when it comes into contact with light.

Addendum 11.6.2020: I ultimately let the bottle go with a heavy heart because the scent was unfortunately indeed too weak for me and also too woody in the base.

Well, I'm curious to see what you think when you get the Marilyn lipstick candle. I think you'll be thrilled with it. If there were ever a scent like that, I would buy all the bottles. So far, I haven't come across any fragrance that smells like it, not even Malle Lipstick Rose.

But so far, I haven't identified any fragrance with that totally old-fashioned lipstick note. I haven't been able to buy any lipstick with that scent in recent years. Maybe we're chasing a phantom? But otherwise, I'm definitely intrigued by this scent, just like you describe it.

You have to forgive the older generation for their lush and vibrant lipstick that’s applied all the way to the edges. It has a lot to do with their vision; they often don’t see the colors as they really are anymore. Their lips become thinner, paler, and wrinkles form around them where the overly applied lipstick settles. Plus, they’re not familiar with lip liners or blotting, and even if they were, I’ve tried so many times... they think they look beautiful that way.

I would also like to belong to one or more fragrance groups, although the lipstick faction isn't for me. As a connoisseur of lipstick scents, you've done a great job categorizing Lipstick Fever among the comparison fragrances, and I'm sure it's very helpful.
