Ambivalence in a bottle…
I don’t think I’ve come across a more controversial scent than this one to be totally honest. The hype, the love, the sheer hatred that this scent has gotten.. someone needs to write a dissertation on it or write a damn book. I, for one, quite enjoy this scent and fall on the side of the fence that loves / adores this scent, mainly because it’s the softest and creamiest rendition of a sandalwood scent I’ve experienced.
When SS first came out, it created an almost mass hysteria among the community with its “limited edition” status. Everyone was in a frenzy over this and tbh when I first tried it and The Wedding Velvet Santal | 35, I wasn’t really wowed by either. I actually preferred Velvet over Silk, but I had something too similar at the time so I disregarded it fairly fast. It was only after maybe the 2nd or 3rd try did I really experience the magic of this one. It’s soft, it’s sweet (not too sweet!), it’s sparkling (the champagne bubbles give that effect), and it’s super DUPER girly. The nectarine is present and gives the scent a juicy and bright bite. The santal comes out more in the dry down, with a subtle dryness. Personally, I think it’s the best Kayali scent and performs much better than many of the houses offerings.
However, and having said all this, I can totally see why someone would hate this scent itself AND the negative experiences that the scent bring. As aforementioned, this scent was supposed to be LE, and so it brought out the utter greed and ugliness of the fragrance community. People were blind buying several bottles just to resell at exorbitant prices as a way to make a steep profit and prey on people fear on missing out. And then when Kayali *finally* decided to make it permanent, it’s as if it lost all of its glitz and glam. You’ll see people say it’s not special, but that’s what happens when the community is quick to put fragrances that may not appeal to everyone on a pedestal.
While I love the scent and plan to keep a bottle on hand always, I cannot fault those who don’t feel the same way, especially given all the chaos surrounding it. If I can say anything else about this scent and in general, DO NOT blind buy a frag cause everyone else is raving about it. Try it for yourself and create your own thoughts and feelings around it.
