Yo Ho Ho...and a Bottle Full of Rum!

Here in Parfumo, bought from a lovely lady, Hermes rang today. A well-filled bottle of this noble brew. Unpacked and quickly sprayed.
At first, I must have looked quite strange, as I smelled something completely different than I had expected. But...genius! The first thought is rum. Pirates, the Caribbean, and rum. Not just any cheap rum or something...no. Only the best. Pusser's Navy, or Old Monk! The alcoholic touch of the solvent alcohol certainly adds to it.
But the rum quickly makes way for uncompromising vanilla, which from then on stands faithfully at the side of the privateer on the bridge. From the cargo hold, there’s still a hint of spices. Hard to grasp and describe. I don’t explicitly smell clove. But tobacco, yes. Just like in my grandpa's cupboard back in the day. Old wood, and good pipe tobacco. With rum aroma and a whole lot of vanilla. A cozy and comforting scent. Perhaps not for everywhere and always. In summer, it might get a bit too muggy.
I love to cook, and I also like to use vanilla in savory contexts rather than just in pudding and cake. And that’s exactly how this fragrance smells. Not sweet, but vanillic. A bit of curry, and a bit of resin. Opoponax and benzoin. And just a hint of cocoa.
In the aftermath, a scent of amber and...tonka remains! Tonka beans are wonderful. The Indians carried them in their medicine bags. Legend has it that nothing evil can exist in a place that smells of tonka.
For me, the image of this fragrance formed quite quickly. Anyone who has ever looked at my profile picture knows that I engage in historical hobbies. And I immediately associated this scent with my (admittedly fictional) South Sea adventures in the 18th century. Havana Vanilla is the scent that provokes pirates! This is how Blackbeard must smell in the series Crossbones. This is how Jack Sparrow smells fresh out of the bath, how Tia Dalma smells in her magical doing. And now me. Genius. How sad that this fragrance is no longer available. It will find a place in my secret treasure.
Oh, and: Bilbo Baggins! I think this scent would suit him just as well as The Odd Fellow's Bouquet.
Thanks to the lovely forum member who made this possible.

You might also like the series Black Sails. ;) I really love Havana Vanille and I keep it in my treasure chest, so to speak, especially in the summer... It’s better suited for fall and winter, but it works well on cooler spring days too. L'Artisan should bring it back into their lineup!
