Nostalgic Curiosity
Some time ago, I stumbled upon the newly and wonderfully clear & contemporary website of the brand Jean d'Aigle. As a friend of traditional French craftsmanship, large Eau de Cologne bottles, and a necessary touch of nostalgia, I spontaneously ordered a few bottles for a small price. They are shipped promptly to Germany for 22.00 EUR, with each bottle currently costing 14.00 EUR for the 250 ml; they have been slightly modernized with black Bakelite caps and slightly altered labels (Update in 2024: Now 29.00 EUR, but also with packaging and a screw-on spray top).
The first fragrance from the company originally founded by the Swiss Jean Soutter and now based in Aubagne near Marseille was probably Chypre from 1945. To this day, the scents are supposedly produced in the old barrels since the company's founding.
The somewhat unappealing, clumsily rough top note fits quite well with the casually interpreted rural life of southern France...and with the price. It is moderately fresh, not very citrusy, and diffusely floral, mossy & earthy.
The short development of the scent quickly transitions to a wonderfully old-fashioned, creamy soft, and floral soapy character that is only slightly green. Buttery ylang-ylang, rose soap, and green lily of the valley seem to radiate their aura. Patchouli, moss & vetiver contribute a restrained herbal woody spiciness and a bit of typical earthiness to the base.
As it progresses, Chypre quickly gathers, appearing composed and peaceful, exuding charming nostalgic Sixties flair, and due to its Eau de Cologne concentration, it feels calm and close to the body, but the longevity is good. The well-known character of old chypre fragrances in the style of Madame Rochas, a bit of Miss Dior, and the old Y from YSL reveals itself...as if these had lent their aura to the scent to continue in a subtly soft Eau de Cologne interpretation. I really like that.
One should not expect a grand masterpiece, but that was probably never the brand's ambition with its Eau de Cologne range. However, those who appreciate handcrafted scents that not everyone has and want to spend only a small amount of money for the joy of it could enjoy a bit of French lifestyle with the fragrances of this brand.
