I cannot relate to the numerous reviews that compare this scent to death or total darkness. The fragrance is definitely dull and dark, yet it is green, green, and more green.
Encre Noire reminds one of vibrant, dark green coniferous forests in the morning, after light fog has moistened decaying wood, oily needles, and the loose ground. This scent is for oneself, not for others. It gives the feeling of being alone enough. Full focus on self-imposed goals. Strongly masculine leaning, only wearable by self-assured women.
Setting: 5 AM before work in the dark, jogging through a foggy, cold coniferous forest
Character: serious - determined and disciplined - speaks little, yet always says the right thing - young entrepreneur with a preference for personal development books
I have to agree here. There may have been reformulations that changed the scent, which was perhaps once more morbid (a few reviews suggest this at least), but I suspect that for many, it's mainly the earlier reactions and the associations induced by the name and bottle that lead them to describe the fragrance as "black," "dead," or "evil." However, it's very green - "herb-fresh" captures it well, just that the herbaceous note dominates.
