First blind associations that the scent evoked in me: autumn, leather, aromatic, brown, leaves, thorny branches, bittersweet berries, smoke (birch tar), nature, fruit and decay, perhaps also a hint of vanilla.
More orderly and sober after multiple tests, I would summarize as follows: brown leather gives birth to fresh, curling herbal smoke. The smoke does not suffocate and has an ethereal, mineral coolness to it. The scent also occasionally gave me the impression of tiger balm. The fine smoky, incense-like birch tar base is prominent and defines the fragrance after a few hours and from then on for a long time.
Comparative fragrances that came to mind were on one hand "Cœur de Noir | Beaufort," likely due to the velvety birch tar combined with what I perceived as vanilla, and also "The Black Knight | Francesca Bianchi," which I attribute to the prominent combination of leather with the listed artemisia in the pyramid. However, compared to Bianchi, Fusciuni's scent seems to me more refined, polished, and conventionally wearable. Those who do not get along with dominant and/or smoky leather notes probably do not need to test this. Speaking of wearability: LAST SEASON manages the balancing act between artistic ambition and conventional wearability, in my opinion, much more easily than Narcotico and "Varanasi | Meo Fusciuni," which I perceived more as mood images, as "scent paintings" rather than as perfume. So, those who have already been "scared off" by these more brutal scents from the brand might still be mildly inclined here.
Sillage/durability are very strong and generous. For that reason alone, I could never imagine buying a bottle (only available in 100 ml). It would last for two lifetimes.
LAST SEASON is for me a great, refined natural scent. A certain roughness cannot be denied, but here it is finely and complexly woven. With the abundance of listed notes, it is almost crazy how many I find understandable and recognizable. Often, I perceive scents "in this style" as quite mushy, blunt. This one feels clear, orderly, skillful, like a kaleidoscope. Respect to Fusciuni for that. Also for the fact that, unlike the Bianchis and Sorcinellis of this fragrance world, he has not diluted, cheapened, or watered down his brand with inflationary, squeaky, pandering releases, but has apparently maintained style, calm, and focus in these hectic, loud times. Of the four fragrances from the brand that I know so far, there hasn't been anything that would have to join my collection (this one comes the closest so far), but I appreciate the seriousness, darkness, melancholy, and poetry that continually flows from their works and find the brand overall to be an enrichment, backed by passion, ambition, and heartfelt dedication.
“...might perhaps still be won over here.”
Brilliant, @Mourant-I’m cracking up!
A wonderful, deeply insightful review. 🙏
For me, #last season is already quite something. As my first “Meos”-a blind buy-it’s already pushing me to new boundaries.
