Just don’t see it in black ... uh, sniff it
The color black has been commented on not only by artists and philosophers, but also, as is well known, by automobile manufacturers.
Probably just as many perfumers have weighed in, with “Use Black” from the Italian niche label Naso di Razo coming across as anything but dark or depressing, but rather quite positive. Patrick Bodifee, the creator of this fragrance, proclaims: Draw a shadow of happiness now, for without it, it is not complete.
The list of ingredients reads almost as if nothing should be missing, although the combination of leather with raspberry initially makes me think of Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford.
However, patchouli has more than just a tint to say here and almost dominates the scent, but then in conjunction with extremely soft oud and supple leather.
Saffron and animalic notes are rather subtly perceptible, while I have been waiting in vain for vanilla in the linear progression, though I also haven’t missed it - at least it is present in an extremely subtle way towards the end.
The highlight of the perfume is indeed located right at the beginning after spraying. Here, “Use Black” reveals itself as a highly interesting woody-spicy mixture with resinous-animalic undertones - somewhat smoky and berry-like, but by no means ordinary or boring. This opening is absolutely usable in terms of its intensity, though it could have taken a bit more time.
After that, it gradually drifts off much too tame, yet remains on a high-quality course.
All in all, an appealing fragrance that certainly deserves more attention.
