a pulsing neon witch's rave
Hexensalbe from Stora Skuggan is the scent of a sleazy promoter palming you a velvet VIP pass to a pulsing neon witch's rave in a forgotten warehouse district. Moonlight refracted through sharp herbal wormwood and licorice shots, hemlock and lichen, earthy and ancient, scratch and hiss beneath twisting, writhing bodies, the dead language of angelica's forked tongue whispers in time with the throbbing patchouli bassline in your blood, a strobing verdant blur of movement and magic, the electrifying hum of a thousand viridian dreams threaded through the smoke machine’s misty veil. Painting the town emerald, bleeding the jade of the moon, one prickly rosemary sequinned heartbeat at a time. Alternately, it is the witches' orgy sequence from Sleep No More, distilled, bottled, and sold as an unsettling green tonic that shimmers when you hold it to the light and shudders down your throat like an ultraviolet bloom of algae.

hot for warlock
Starts as black liquorice and crushed pine needles (could this be a boreal gourmand?), but soon thickens into an occultist’s bunker, heavy with woodrot and mortared herbs. The anise that lingers is beautifully rendered; a poison-green absinthe that goes down surprisingly smooth. But the background feels a little too lived-in for my liking, almost musty. And quite aftershave-y. It’s a thick fragrance. Rather than carrying Hexensalbe with me, I felt like I was swimming through it. Or maybe I’ve been burned by too many patchoulis before. Less the VVitch, more sweaty hookup in the basement of a Berkeley co-op.

The opening notes, though? Now that’s living most deliciously.

Mental Snapshot: A trail of obsidian gems guide you through the wood, sweet as sap and thick as night. You creep through the snarled roots of an ancient yew into a subterranean hollow. Something lives here. The walls prickle with a thorny library of herbs. Something wicked. Its Birkenstocks scrape the bare earth. “Dost thou like the taste of ayahuasca?”

tl;dr: Berkeley Phillip

Flying Ointment
Hexensalbe has an unapologetic, astringent opening that, as Egg points out, smells a lot like crushed roots and herbs. The angelica and coniferous notes develop beautifully as it dries, combining with the patchouli base to form a warm, herbaceous hiding place in a distant forest. Belladonna seems like a potential fantasy accord, and if tuberose is present here it's as the breeze. I loved wearing this. I felt like I'd contracted with a spirit for strength.

The lewd witch
Please don't scold me now. This is what Stora Skuggan suggests about the fragrance.

Angelica, the lewd witch
was overcome by very strange urges.
To redeem herself, she thought it would be good if she
rub herself on a hemlock-covered broomstick.

Belladonna glow in her marzipan eyes,
she dashes like mad on her vehicle through the hemlock forest.
The neighborhood cries bitter-salty tears of fear
Tuberose tears soon.

The style of formal warm wood,
caught fire when braking on the patch earth.
Even the witch was no longer entirely comfortable with this.

Exhausted, she now lies on the ground,
Her hair streaked with lichen.
Her equipment badly
battered from the flight,
battered from the flight,
now adorns the entrance to the witch's house.

And the moral of the story,
Never, never, never put witch's flying ointment on a broomstick.

This or something similar could be imagined if you
the lines from Stora Skuggan.

In the end, it is a rather spicy, somewhat sweet forest fragrance with a hint of bitterness. A forest for mass tourism, but quite pleasant to wear.
The mushrooms were probably trampled by the crowds. I can't find them here.

I really like the fragrance, even as it is. But my expectations of something extraordinary were still somewhat disappointed.

Witch Johnny
I would like to write about "witches' ointment", as the discussion about it so far has amused me greatly.
You want and expect the witch with excitement and who comes tapping out of the forest instead? Johnny, the idiot. (Also called "Liquorice Johnny" by Parfuma Brida in this context). If that's not a nice surprise ?!
What I have tested so far, initially with excitement, of "witch scents", has smelled disappointingly bitter and smoky and I didn't like it at all. Yes, Marieposa, who wrote "Hex sell's" was right. The name is appealing.
That's why I want to murmur in my sexiest Hexy voice: Johnny, where's the ointment? This midlife-crisis-plagued fifty-something is telling me in all seriousness that he's just had a shower in the woods...
With a witch?! I ask, struggling to overcome my jealousy. "No, with herbal shower cream," he grumbles, cool as usual, and I can't help but sniff him a little and pretend to take a selfie of us. He seems to be used to it and looks impassively into the camera with dilated pupils (he's eaten deadly nightshade?!). He smells pleasantly medicinal. Gentle. Like herbs. In fact, like the medicine cabinet with natural remedies mentioned by Charle Ambre. Very pleasant. I can't say whether he also applied Sauvage, as Scenteniell suspects. Never tested.
"Hex sell's" applies to me, Johnny doesn't.
Nevertheless, I'm a bit pleased about Johnny, here in the role of the Shaman.
Yesterday I smelled a sweet floral at the beginning, which I had attributed to tuberose. And belladonna, although I never sniffed any of them.
The fragrance is quiet, unobtrusive and complex. Woody, herbal, a tiny bit floral, delicately spicy. Not unlike a classic men's fragrance (Merida).
You expect the wild, a little bit crazy witch and get the nature-loving Johnny in an identity crisis, who has just retrained as an office clerk....ere are worse things - right? ;-)) I like it and the fragrance sparked my interest in the Stora Skuggan brand, as I immediately found it strikingly beautiful. After today's test, where the flowers have made themselves scarce and I only notice the herbal mixture, it will probably not be a candidate for purchase. Perhaps I will secretly spray it on my unscented husband once in a while. He'll cope better with it than he did with Bandit (2012) Eau de Parfum. Also a great fragrance, but that's another story to be told another time....
Thanks for reading and have fun testing and discussing!

Unmistakably unique notes of liquorice and belladonna, the latter of which being easy to mistake for a tomato. Remarkable aromatic.

This is a perfume in the vein of a protection spell. Dark herbs, smoked woods, soft licorice… absolutely beautiful, but a test.

Smells like you found a stack of liquorice left in a dark forest. Sweet but also woody. Smells like christmas market to me.
