It warms my heart / Warmth in a bottle
TL;DR: Herod is a unique fragrance with sweet-spicy-floral-smoky notes that brings back fond memories. Despite its appealing composition, the lasting power of three and a half to four hours could be better. Overall, it is an olfactory masterpiece that will be particularly appreciated during the cold season.
It's true what people say: fragrances hold on to memories. And Herod has precisely this special ability. When I smell this fragrance on the atomizer, I immediately find myself in that beautiful moment long gone.
It feels like a tender reminder of the kindness and warmth that we all carry within us. It evokes a sense of gentleness that brightens my radiance and makes my interactions more warm-hearted. All my life I have felt a great love in my heart, which this fragrance instantly recalls when I am caught up in the daily grind.
For me, Herod is a unique composition of sweet, spicy, floral and slightly smoky notes that combine to create an extraordinary aroma.
Herod opens with a warm, slightly smoky cinnamon note, accompanied by a spicy-fresh woodiness created by the synthetic fragrance ingredient "Pepperwood" - which, by the way, does not smell synthetic at all! The fragrance opens slowly within ten minutes and becomes heavier. The cinnamon becomes significantly spicier and sweeter. There is also incense, delicate floral notes and a rich, warm depth from the tobacco.
Around the fifteenth minute, Herod reaches an intoxicatingly spicy-sweet depth. The result is a beautiful, complex interplay of sweet, spicy, floral and smoky notes. At this point, I must confess: I find it difficult to specifically smell out individual notes.
The fragrance accord beautifully evokes the clichéd image of a Christmas atmosphere in a warm, dark room lit by a burning fireplace. A peppery spiciness and a floating smokiness can be detected in the background, gently rounding off the fragrance and leaving an aromatic tingle in the nose when smelled.
Subsequently, Herod retains this composition for about two hours until it begins to lose its sillage. At this point, it does not have a bombastic radiance, but it is not a fragrance close to the skin either. It is still easily perceptible from an arm's length away.
Over the course of the third hour, the strength of Herod decreases more and more and it is reduced to vanilla and patchouli, which can still be smelled at close range. After three and a half hours and more, the fragrance remains close to the skin until it has almost completely disappeared. The total longevity of the spring 2022 batch on my skin is therefore around three and a half to four hours.
This is its only shortcoming: Herod is as beautiful as it is weak, which is a real shame. For a fragrance in this price and quality category, its longevity could be improved.
Nevertheless, Herod is a wonderful fragrance for anyone looking for something special. Its composition creates a beautiful intertwining of warm and spicy notes, making it perfect for late fall and cold winter. I can definitely understand why some people here have also written that they like to apply the fragrance lightly in summer.
Anyone who has not yet tried this fragrance or is unsure for other reasons is missing out on an olfactory masterpiece by the sadly deceased perfumer Oliver Pescheux. Herod moved me deeply and has thus become a vessel for beautiful feelings.
