Contemporary Classic with British Understatement

1902. The year when Walter Penhaligon created the fragrance for the Duke of Malb.... Oh no, everyone has already mentioned that here.

1902. When this fragrance first saw the light of day in 1902, the world was still spared from world wars, Germany still had an emperor, the Ottomans were still partly roaming the Balkans, the first trams were running through Cologne, and 1. FC Köln had not yet been founded. With such old fragrances, I am burning with curiosity about what the original version must have smelled like?!

Well, to the scent. The beginning is very lemony, very fresh. You can almost feel and smell the bitter refreshment of the lemon with a hint of lime. As if you were pouring freshly squeezed lemon juice over your wrist. If you enjoy citrus-fresh fragrances, you will undoubtedly like this one.

After a short time, it becomes needly. For me, it’s a very high-quality pine-needle scent. Like a walk in the woods; as if you were smelling resinous, fresh pine needles that had been dipped in freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Honestly, it smells much better than I am trying to describe here. You can practically smell the high-quality and pure ingredients of this classic.

I can't really detect a true scent progression. After a few hours, the perfume becomes a bit softer and rounder overall, without fading away. The longevity is, assuming a little touch-up around lunchtime, present all day. The sillage is pleasant but only fills the room at times. The bottle, from the cap to the ribbon to the label (in my opinion, there are hardly better labels than those from Penhaligon) to the bottom, is very elegant and refined.

Overall, a modern classic not just for the English gentleman. Those who appreciate fresh, citrusy, and simultaneously woody-needly fragrances will definitely find pleasure in this. It remains on my wish list. Christmas is coming soon. Hohoho.....

Best regards
