The Portuguese Spice Route
My journey would not be short, so I said goodbye to my wife and children, at least that was my intention in a few moments. Six months... it would not be my last sea voyage, that was clear to me. A position with the Armada was very valuable. We would start from Lisbon and initially travel to the Cape Verde Islands. After that, we were to sail around Africa, and I hoped our ship would survive the journey. Rotten ships would be torn apart by the currents! They had seen better days, but you never know what awaits you out there on the sea. The destination was the Spice Islands of India. Several spices were on our list, some I knew and their breathtaking scent! I was looking forward to Ceylon and its cinnamon!
But other spices were also on the agenda. We needed cloves from Ternate, myrrh, and among others, vanilla. That’s why we had to take the route between Africa and Madagascar. It would be an exciting six months, and I went back to my family to say goodbye one last time.
Route des Epices is an exciting fragrance, both in terms of its theme and its composition. Many important trade spices can be found, as well as Mediterranean plants from the Mediterranean region, from where we were heading to India. One example is the rockrose. Other spices are not even included as fragrance components, such as pepper.
To me, the perfume smells very fine and multi-layered. The spices do not impose themselves. Cinnamon is clearly recognizable but pleasant, not overpowering. In general, I would like to note that the scent smells like a blend of fragrances, where none stands out but all blend into the whole. I find this remarkable because often cumin, cardamom, and also cloves have sharp scent properties. It smells like a breeze wafting over from the spice market or from the ship, laden with different spices.
The major drawback is the H/S because this harmony of scents, this olfactory euphony also means that the H/S is indeed improvable. Nevertheless, it is a very beautifully thematically captured spice scent. If it were not discontinued, I would have bought it long ago, even though spices are not my focus.

I've had the spices from your lovely comment in my nose longer than Bourdon's surprising late work has been on the market - just need to slightly adjust the route: on the way there, a stop in Madeira to quickly pack the basic recipe for Vindaloo to Goa. And back via the Azores: exchanging oranges for cinnamon and tea.
