Adventuresome, Masculine, Friendly, and a Little Too Safe
A few weeks ago I ordered some scents from Scentsy.com through a Scentsy party. I'd never heard of the company before, but their big thing is heated aromatic wax; they do room sprays and perfumes as well. The rep who worked next to me at work had a bag full of samples, and of course I sniffed every single one! Anyhow, I ended up ordering two sticks of solid perfume, this fragrance and My Dear Watson.
The actual container looks like a cylindrical version of the old L'eggs container -- that same silvery shine. However, the cylinder is in two parts that fit over each other. Once you open that up, inside is a black cylinder which allows the top half off, which reveals the actual perfume, but it has a plastic cap like a contact lens, which you must remove. Then, you can turn the bottom black container and up comes the perfume. It's a Matyoshka experience. It's all very classy visually, and tactilely appealing without being femme; the colors of Route 66 are silver, black, and olive green. Kudos to Scentsy for making something appealing to us guys.
I've never used solid perfume before, but I have used solid deodorant, so I didn't worry about swinging this. Three swipes of the stick on the wrists, and off we go. Within the first 15 minutes, Route 66 smells very outdoorsy, like some kind of tree, but a fruity kind of tree; maybe fir and pear? After this, a leather or suede note comes out mingled with musk. Last up is something aromatic that propels a clean vibe.
The projection is just right at a foot or so; you can smell it around you, but it's not overpowering or floor-conquering. The overall feel is one of outdoorsy, masculine, adventure -- it's named well. It has some kind of retro-cool 50's rockabilly kind of vibe to it, something quintessentially American. It inhabits a different space than John Varvitos' USA (which is more of a leather and oil, guitar amp vibe), but it shares the same American sensibility to it. It's interesting to see people rediscovering an emotional sense of what it means to be American.
It might be a little too safe for me, but it's adventuresome, masculine, yet it's still friendly. I like the initial phase, but depending on how you wear it, it doesn't stay there. If you wear it on the inside of your wrists, the heat from your pulse points fragments the scent into its constituent components and breaks it down too quickly. That way, Route 66 turns into a vaguely woody aquatic. If you wear it somewhere else (I tried the back of my wrists), it coheres and keeps its original aroma. Duration is at least twelve hours, but projection diminishes to a skin scent by hour twelve.
I enjoyed Route 66, but even with wearing on the back of my wrists, it lost its potency too soon, and it became uninvolving after the first few hours. I don't know if I just became used to it or what happened, exactly. Your mileage my vary of course, but Route 66 gets a "take it for a test drive" from me.
