Canned Fruit on Balsam of Tolu

I should have perhaps been suspicious when a fragrance is advertised with the "freshness of a forest landscape" and none of the notes really connect with the European idea of a forest or at least with freshness. I had actually expected something fresh-woody when I held the test vial in my hands. What I got was canned fruit in thick syrup: peaches, apricots, something along those lines, with a lot of sugar, flavored with plenty of vanilla. Possibly also candied mandarins, which are hard to distinguish under a thick layer of syrup. The ginger, which can be so wonderful in fragrances with its peppery, fruity sharpness, has unfortunately also been candied. Probably in the syrup made from boiled licorice sticks.
At currently 15 degrees below zero, I would have gladly settled for a few pleasantly sweet exotic fruits with spices instead of the fresh forest landscape. I even quite like anise or star anise in fragrances. But the blend, which initially still smells relatively authentic like an opened can of fruit, increasingly takes on the artificial, penetrating scent of cheap drugstore scented candles labeled "Tropical Fruit - Vanilla." This is definitely not something I can tolerate on myself or in my immediate surroundings.

Patiently waiting it out brings no glimmers of hope. No rosewood with its fresh, somewhat lavender-like spicy and rose-like scent in sight, no earthy patchouli, no woody, bitter vetiver. Just vanilla with synthetic fruit aroma on vanilla-sweet balsam of Tolu, which at least after 2 to 3 hours is no longer quite as nauseatingly heavy and intrusive. I wonder what this could have to do with a fresh forest landscape when I no longer feel sick.
The balsam of Tolu base is quite nice once the fruits have disappeared. If you like this very vanilla-like, sweet resin - unfortunately, I do not.

This fragrance is probably interesting for lovers of heavy sweet Lutens scents - Fleurs d'Oranger, Un Bois Vanille, etc.
For me, it doesn't fit at all, and probably not for other friends of fresh forest landscapes either.

I didn't want to say it so directly, but you're right about the cheap drugstore candle comparison.
