I confess: my only personal acquaintance with Sicily took place on a Thursday, December 21, coming from Malta.
The next morning, the flight back to Germany, to the pre-Christmas gray city, was scheduled.
The suitcase was already packed when I was picked up from the hotel at five in the morning and driven with other equally crazy tourists across the island to the port of Valetta. There, the catamaran awaited us, which was to take us across the Mediterranean in ninety minutes.
It was the last trip of the year; then the holidays and the New Year would begin for the crew as well.
Since I absolutely wanted to experience this adventure, the ride on a catamaran, I found myself in southern Sicily just before Christmas. From the port, we first took a bus to Syracuse; afterwards to the "Archaeological Park," where the ordered lunch was also waiting.
Already on the way to the city, I admired all the still lush citrus trees, which were simultaneously bearing blossoms and fruits.
Now, 18° winter temperature cannot be compared to the summery scent impressions that "Agrumi di Sicilia" offers as a concentrate.
The illusion of the dark green, lacquer-like leaves, which sometimes almost form a natural roof, is impressive in itself. The scent of this sun-drenched foliage seems to underscore the quickly developing, enticing fruitiness as a nuance.
The walk in an imagined lemon grove can begin: ripe, fragrance-laden bergamots open this scent. With the slightest pressure, they seem to release their essential oils.
Thus, despite a certain oily heaviness, there is also something very lively, floating in this fragrance composition.
