Eau de Daphne du Maurier.......

.......or subtly uncanny stories. Perhaps she is still known to the older "Parfumos," the writer of the uncanny, of subtle terror, which pulls us deeper into the pores of her stories with each line. Nothing tangible, only swirling shadows, and yet the net in which one is caught is drawn ever tighter. Just think of stories like "The Birds" (filmed by Hitchcock), "A Drop of Time," or "When the Gondolas Bear Mourning." And many more.
And these novels and stories smell, if one were to describe them olfactorily, of the darkest patchouli,
of dimly lit rooms, of winding and confusing streets... of traces of incense and myrrh, in which the presence of "light" is just hinted at.
It seems to me as if one of these "strange stories" was "read" into this fragrance, refined with ingredients, and declared as "Gothic Poison" from "Devil's Kitchen" as Eau de Parfum.
Which still has its followers. Just like the books of the aforementioned author.
You can read them multiple times, and new secrets always emerge, placing you in circumstances you didn't notice during the previous reading...
Yet they imprint themselves in memory for all eternity, and always reinvent themselves "anew."
The same happens to me with fragrances like "Gothic Poison." I can sniff it again and again and believe I have drawn a final conclusion from it.
But each time, its "story" presents itself to me a little differently. Almost imperceptibly different, yet noticeably persistent. Always subtle, mysterious, and mystically patchouli.
......Was there just a hint of cinnamon??!.... No..... rather something like allspice.....
Ah... it is the trace of incense..... and there in front, a pale light is glowing......?
Ah, that must be the moon; it is already evening. But I was just in that room with the furniture from the year... hun... dert... wen... de.... Myrrh, that is it.........

I've always loved that gaslight vibe! So far, Devil's Kitchen has disappointed me... but now I'll keep Eau de Daphne in mind ;-)

I really like your comment, but I'm overwhelmed by the scent. Too much pure patchouli reminds me of my apprenticeship at the drugstore and the tons of dried herbs we apprentices had to refill every day. But now I'm thinking about whether to pull out Rebecca or Cousin Rachel from the bookshelf again.
