The Gray Wall

Well, I actually have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Tom Ford's fragrances. The good man (since he is also not a bad film director) has a largely different olfactory taste than I do. Somehow, I admire the guy for his versatility, yet I still can't warm up to his waters. It happens, of course! With "Noir Anthracite," it’s a bit different. Finally, a "Tom" that I would wear without hesitation, although this EDT doesn’t exactly blow me away. But it definitely has something that I don’t have to be "afraid" of when I wear it... ;-)

This rough and gray scent, which smells a bit like tire rubber (it’s likely mainly due to the patchouli and galbanum), is usually not really my thing. Of course, the pepper fits quite well with it. In this respect, "Noir Anthracite" is very consistent in its statement and absolutely authentic. I appreciate it when the brand name and advertising promise hint at what is actually behind a fragrance.

So here we are dealing with a gray wall. The clay mortar is omnipresent but doesn’t necessarily have to come from the big city; it could also be part of an ancient masonry. Life and time itself have left their marks here. A citrusy herb grows out of the wall. A truck just drove by. It rained last night. Next door, wood is being sawed.

All of this can be located in this scent if one has enough imagination. It never becomes overpowering. Pepper and patchouli dominate "Noir Anthracite," with me liking the former a lot and the latter only to a certain extent. But as in real life, it’s all about the right mix and balance, and that is present for me here. This is the first Tom Ford I can trust because it has something familiar about it. Not super beautiful, but intriguing; not an irresistible seducer, but a fitting companion.
