Fifty shades of grey...

No...certainly not! With great certainty, anyone reading this here on Parfumo is likely to think of a certain film title. Unfortunately, that won’t happen, or should I say thankfully?! That is, as so often, in the eye of the beholder.
I chose this fitting title because Anthracite presents, in my eyes, exactly these very diverse shades of grey. This intense and very expressive Tom Ford has been with me for quite a while now, which is why I want to dedicate a few more lines to him here with this comment.
Noir Anthracite starts off with distance and a sense of separation. Many of these grey facets and dark sprinkles reveal themselves in the opening phase. Through the precise and skillful use of Sichuan pepper and tuberose, impressions of a cool, matte veil emerge, which lays on the skin with a certain acidity, sharpness, and bitterness. As if to say: Here I am now, and I won’t be leaving anytime soon! Now see how you manage with me...
This "managing" is meant quite seriously. In my opinion, Noir Anthracite possesses a very strongly emotionally cascading component. Due to this latent melancholic start, I’ve had days where I almost regretted applying it. Because when your emotional state doesn’t align with "the sun is shining from my...", the scent can actually support that state in a negative way.
For a long time, I didn’t know whether to consider this phenomenon good or bad. However, I see it more clearly now. Because the concept of the fragrance has been implemented with all consistency. Such a thing is commendable and flawless in every respect. As the wearer, I just have to decide whether I am in the right mode for it.
For the upcoming season, autumn, the scent fits perfectly. Noir Anthracite is simply predestined to be worn now, in autumn. Once a certain groove with the scent veil has settled in, Noir works wonderfully. Its greatness comes from its inherent ambivalence - its contradictions! Paradoxically, after a certain time, precisely when the dark noble woods take over, the entire scent spectrum is flipped or turned upside down. Suddenly, there is a lot of warmth and comfort. Soft and gentle nuances take away the cold and sharp edges of the initially harsh construct, which almost made the scent feel loveless at the beginning.
Classically, elegantly, and perfectly staged fragrant woods transform the cool veil into a warming cloak. Thus, it becomes a cozy companion for nearly the entire day. Because it also features a certain durability. Several hours of longevity are not a problem. Therefore, the dosage should be chosen wisely to prevent the sillage and projection from getting out of hand.
When viewed in its entirety, Noir Anthracite is exactly what it wants to be or should be. Certainly not suitable for everyone, special in its own way, but for me, absolutely authentic and convincing, coldly aloof and warmly cuddly, repulsively foreign and attractively familiar...

*Happiness does not consist in doing what I want, but in wanting what I do*

Thank you for reading...

P.S.: I don’t even know the film...:-))

Very accurately described. I liked it too, but after testing it several times, it didn't end up being a candidate for purchase. But who knows, tastes change from time to time... ;)

As a big fan of the book and movie... just kidding, I don't actually know them ;-)
I don't know the scent either, but after your comment, I guess I should say, not yet. It's going on the wish list!

This type of fragrance - like Grey Flannel, Eau Gentiane, or Opus VII - requires a certain mindset to appreciate; you need to be balanced, otherwise it won't work. I really like this somewhat aloof 'gray' style - there's a soft core hidden in that rough exterior, and the right people can see it ;-)
The watery tuberose used here is definitely masculine and well-executed, just like your comment. Enjoyed reading it - cheers!!

Ambivalence and changes in a scent are always exciting and fascinating. Some fragrances require a bit of effort to appreciate, and that makes you love them even more. This one could be one of those.

I don't either, and neither does the book :) You describe the scent very accurately and beautifully. I like that. I see it the same way; it was designed with great consistency and very uncompromisingly, which is something that characterizes several Tom Fords. He especially isn't afraid to show his love and respect for vintage scents in his creations. However, I found the beginning, as you described, a bit too off-putting to give it another chance. Still, I admired it.

A very nice comment about a magnificent scent. I don't experience anything warming from it, but that's exactly why I like it so much. That distance that it brings is sometimes just what you need.

Perfectly described, I would say!
I know the scent, of course, but it always felt suspiciously distant to me. But that's just how gray is! Great comment!

Very beautifully described what the scent evokes for you. I like melancholic fragrances that also provide comfort, but the tuberose might be tricky.

Very detailed and well described. For me, the scent is probably too sharp and too unique.

I have some mood-enhancing scents like that too, so I can really relate to your words. However, this one would probably be too bitter for me.

Well described and really to the point. It’s truly very special. Even among the TF fragrances.
There are really days when it just doesn’t fit.
It was fun to read.

I think it's described really well, sounds very intriguing, and it's true that some scents are definitely mood-dependent. I believe TF has quite a few beautiful fragrances in their lineup.
I don't know that movie either ;)

What a great description! And your enthusiasm for the scent is really delightful. Unfortunately, this fragrance just didn’t resonate with me at all. It came across as harsh, bitter, and very uninviting. It really put me off. I prefer the Noir without Anthracite more :-)
