Fantasmagoriana

A deeply hypnogogic scent, all dark, narcotic myrrh and nocturnal resins. A midnight philtre, thickened with age and swimming murkily at the bottom of an ancient crystal flacon, tucked away in some moth-eaten velvet robes. This is the scent I imagine Mary Shelley wearing during that infamous summer in 1816 at the Villa Diodati with Byron and Polidori.

Perfume Oil overwhelmed by base carrier

My issue with Laura Tonatto AMIR is different from Aromi's (see below). I have a roller ball of the perfume oil, and the first ingredient and carrier base, prunus amygdalis dulcis oil, overwhelms all of the alleged notes of the perfume (the second named ingredient). Really, what I smell above all is almond oil! Yes, there is a labdanum-amber and slight musky quality here, but I smell virtually no floral or citrus notes. Even the myrrh is hidden below my threshold of detectability in this thick oil.

Is this the same smell which Aromi describes below, of a Jovan-type composition? I have to plead ignorance, but I suspect that the scent is not unlike that of drugstore musk oil which has been dressed up a bit with some vague and abstract florality or what not.

I don't really mind smelling like almond oil, to be honest, and I am sure that it is good for my skin, but I cannot recommend the perfume oil version of AMIR to anyone who is looking for something more than a pleasant and rich moisturizing oil for the neck and décolleté area.

Amber fragrances can be something very beautiful, very sensual, warm, and cozy. I have had the opportunity to test quite a few and have also found my favorites.

Amir also goes in this direction (strangely, I keep thinking about the Pamir Mountains). I can hardly perceive any floral or fruity accords, however, Petitgrain is quite noticeable, albeit only directly on the skin.

In the projection, the scent is amber-balsamic-resinous from the very beginning. And it remains so; I cannot note any significant change over time.
But there is something here that makes my decision easy: Amir will not be among my favorite amber fragrances.

There is something bitter, somewhat musty, that bothers me. Amir is also stricter, more masculine, woodier, and not as soft and creamy as, for example, Ambra di Luna or Ambre Narguilé, and the amber-resinous note becomes stronger over time but also a bit sharper and sweeter. Therefore, I could imagine Amir better on a man, also because the sweetness is likely to be somewhat less on male skin. I felt as if I were sitting in a Bedouin tent, the gentlemen smoking hookah and having rubbed their bodies with oriental oils to ward off insects and bad odors.

The cognac-colored liquid really packs a punch!!! Sillage like an atomic cloud and longevity like super glue! A literally overwhelming experience that I had to wash off after a few hours, as the intensity was barely bearable.

Not a Housewife

As so often, I tried to figure out what the name of the perfume might mean. In the case of Amir, I found the answer in the Turkish language and had to chuckle a bit.

According to Babla, Amir means: commander; chief; lord; chieftain; and now pay attention: housewife!

None of the translations do justice to this beautiful, slightly melancholic scent, and certainly not housewife!

Amir is a rather heavy balsamic fragrance. Even the top note, despite the flowers, comes across as quite spicy and a bit cumbersome.

Throughout the entire fragrance journey, the smoky and balsamic notes firmly hold the scepter. Although apparently no patchouli has been used in Amir, it somehow smells like it from the heart note onwards. Either this ingredient has not been listed, or the combination of amber, labdanum, and musk is responsible for it.

By the way, the liquid is not as light as depicted here, but rather almost cola-colored, which fits the fragrance statement better.

Amir is a fitting perfume for gray, rainy winter days when you want to go for a walk despite the bad weather and fully embrace the mood without falling into a depression.
