Weightless Darkness

It's an idiosyncratic blend.

My first thought was: Surprisingly floral - where does that come from?

For a few brief seconds, this impression of a transparent floral note remains, then the fragrance begins to expand and turns dark, yet cool, almost a bit minty. Not the mintiness of a summer drink, more the ethereal herbal coolness of cough syrup. Many brown associations: medicine. Workshop with woodcut. Ballistol. Conifer. Floor wax. Pepper.

It wears a flannel shirt, the fragrance, for sure, in checkered flannel, and it has just come from the woods. There’s dirt on its boots and conifer resin on its hands and hair, and it has worked all day, oiling and setting up machines, accompanied by a delicate fresh note of sweat. Not unpleasant, but definitely physical. Later, incense joins in along with a nearly sweet, delicate grass note; perhaps it’s the green fig that I otherwise wouldn’t recognize. And if so, then more fig leaf than the fruit.

The repeatedly mentioned leather associations I cannot quite grasp, or - wait! - perhaps just a little, in the form of leather care.

What impresses me about Marie Urban-Le Febvre's fragrances, as a commonality, as a signature, so to speak, is their transparency. They are heavy yet effortless, and all are very slender.

Singular Oud is also like that. Not a weighty block, not a monolith of a fragrance, but light and floating and finely woven, and in that respect, it is - although dark and human - an exceptionally modern, urban scent.

You have to achieve that with an oudist first, which is why it has won my admiration. Even if it hasn’t won my heart.

Lastly: Along with the delicate statement, the sillage is moderate, the projection is the same, and the longevity on fabric - unfortunately - is rather poor. That’s a pity.

The transparency in this fragrance is really the highlight. You've expressed that wonderfully for me.

Thank you. I've actually smelled almost all of them now, except for the "special scents," and I'm really impressed by how transparent and sleek fragrances can be. Even though I haven't bought any yet.

I only know Lost Paradise from this brand, and I love it a lot.

The merits of the fragrance seem obvious, but I still can't wear ouds.

Very nice, insightful comment. However, I felt the same way as Schatzi. The scent and the label didn't really resonate with me. Not yet, but that can change quickly sometimes!.. ;)

That doesn't sound like a scent for me at all; just the fig rules it out. And your insightful comment confirms that.

Green fig leaf, floor wax, leather care, and pepper - that does sound quite quirky, indeed.

Cool headline and a nicely casual fragrance description that I enjoyed reading. For that, a full cough syrup trophy! (but the good one, from back in the day...)

What a flexible, precise comment. The only way to praise it is to paraphrase: it's not a heavy burden of a text, but light, airy, and finely woven. In that sense, despite being sparkling and human, it’s an exceptionally modern, urban comment. I guess on my next trip to Kantstraße to visit Mr. Lehmann, I should also make a pilgrimage to Bleibtreustraße to see the Urbans.

Great description! Do you know Waldarbeiter? By the way, I actually see the limitations you mentioned at the end as a positive. - And there's a really surprising connection to a scent that's far from SO: What you wrote about the sweat note, I almost said word for word in my comment on "Lys Méditerranée." I would have never thought of that on my own. Thanks!

I also find it very refined and polished - a completely Prussian Oud ;)

You really liked it, huh? Unfortunately, I couldn't get into it at all. I didn't find it good or bad. Maybe I'm just not an oud person? Although I do get weak for Sourire du Diable.

I can agree with that! I also like the US fragrances, among other reasons, for their lack of pretentiousness, and yet the Singular Oud is so multifaceted, deep, and special. Luckily, I personally don't have any longevity or sillage issues with the Urban Scents. By the way, in warmth, the Singular Oud becomes much softer, deeper, and more intense.

Nice description of a fragrance from a line that just didn’t resonate with me at all. My impression was that the scents were expressionless and bland with little longevity. For what’s offered, it would be too expensive for me. So, I made my peace with Urban Scents.

Very accurately described, we have quite similar impressions. By the way, the same goes for the "Urban-Scents-DNA." I find the scents to be characteristically very human, balanced, and approachable. They somehow make you feel understood. There's never anything over-the-top or egocentric-extravagant about them. And yes, they're usually as sleek as their creator. Ballistol trophy (I'm a good shot, harhar)!
