Why the Past Cannot Be Reproduced Exactly. Two Examples
My husband and I love Star Trek. When we met, he brought this passion with him. Since we both have nerdy traits, I also took a liking to the Federation, Kirk and Picard, Janeway and much more. Right now, we are watching Discovery. Season by season. A series with spectacular effects that utilizes all the technology that is possible today. In Ultra HD with Dolby Atmos sound. It's a lot of fun. Definitely. However, it is supposed to take place around the same time as Captain Kirk's Enterprise from the seventies. And here, I really can't make a connection anymore. Everything is too far removed from the rather simply constructed technical possibilities of that time.
I observe the same more and more in the world of perfume. I was tantalized by the new Valentino Donna Born in Roma Pink PP. As much as the bottle in its screaming pink repels me, I was equally drawn to the comparison with the vintage Classique. A great fragrance love from my youth. Safanad by Parfums de Marly comes close, but it doesn't quite reach it. It is a bit sharper with its jasmine, and that's exactly what I don't always like. So here is the hope for a new fragrance love. Since I was only interested in the scent, I would have almost disregarded the pink bottle. But it turned out differently.
Already when unpacking the sharing post from the lovely Diana970411, I smelled it. Fruity notes. Penetrating. Like gummy bears. And when I sprayed it this morning, my first impression was unfortunately confirmed. No orange blossom, no bourbon vanilla, but just another ethyl maltol bomb. Very penetrating, very demanding, very clingy. No, this is not my world. For this reason, I also had to sort out Meringa by Profumum Roma.
Although the pink Valentino is supposed to remind one of the nineties and Classique with its very special, up-to-date style, it has as little in common with it as Star Trek Discovery does with Next Generation or Voyager. And unlike Star Trek, where every new series eventually grabbed me with its characters, with ethyl maltol in this concentration, unfortunately, I find that, no matter how well thought out and made, I just can't connect with such compositions anymore.
In the nineties, there were already fragrances with this scent ingredient; Angel and Wish were probably two of the most prominent representatives, but not in abundance yet. Classique was certainly no wallflower and also sweet, but this fragrance was always very clearly a floral scent for me and not a gourmand. I would have never associated it with gummy bears, which unfortunately I do once again here. The base note of the pink Valentino is indeed quite nice and feels more perfumey and less edible again, but the wearer has to show patience before getting there.
What a pity. But I had almost suspected that this one would also be very sweet. For this reason, I am unfortunately finding it hard to discover anything in the designer segment anymore. But it will have its fans. I am sure of that. Sweet, loud, and sugary should, however, be among the favored attributes.
I've never gone beyond the original Star Trek series from the 60s/70s. The wonderful Mr. Spock and the ever-tightening Captain Kirk episode after episode. Now I'm wondering what he might have smelled like back then.
I still haven't completely overcome my summer perfume reluctance, but I totally agree with you, a gummy bear gourmand is pretty far from my fragrance preferences.
Sweet, loud, and sugary - three attributes that my fragrance should definitely NOT have.
Pink and rose are not my colors anyway. But I've always liked Star Trek 😊
Even more so, I love Star Wars - may the Force be with you. 🏆
Or, as Yoda would say:
A fragrance in pink bottles you should not test! 😂
I was also curious about how it is, because the bottle really captivated me. But I can save myself the purchase for now, and I already have plenty of the old Valentino.
Once again, a great review! ☺️👍🏻
Phew... I was excited about the scent at first, but I thought nothing good could come in such a bottle...🙈😅 sorry!
After reading your review, I know I can trust my gut feeling 😂😂
Best regards!
Wow, the bottle is already screaming so loudly; the amount of ethyl maltol would definitely give me a spontaneous nose hair failure. I honestly wouldn’t have the patience to wait for it to become bearable. Now I’m craving gummy bears... :)
It's a flanker of a flanker of a flanker, and I don't even know how many... 🤔😂😅😴
The current zeitgeist 👻 has called for it.
I can't join in just like you, dear V💜.
🏆✨👾
Oh dear, dear 🌞,
You always manage to beam me back to the past. 🚀
My brother and I were allowed to watch half an hour of TV every day, but we could save up our TV time. We always chose Star Trek, charming Jenny, and whenever he took pills. - We found it super exciting back then, and when we were allowed to watch Edgar Wallace, we would check under the bed in the evening to see if anyone was hiding! ..And the moon landing - I will never forget that moment on TV.
I happened to check it out again recently. The simple ways shows were made back then. - I had to admit to myself how old-school I've become!
But now about the scent: I don't like this one much either. But the Donna with its leather smell really blows me away!
I’m not familiar with the scents you mentioned, but I’m not a fan of sugary fragrances either. Since I enjoy watching Star Trek myself, it’s a good comparison. I really enjoyed reading this.
I’m a big fan of the Star Trek film series with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. 😉
I'll stick with Kirk, maybe Picard, and definitely Lower Decks - but not with this perfume. I guess I'm not the target audience anyway; I don't even own pink pumps. It's great that you tested it, I definitely wouldn't have dared to...
Girls who smell like that are not around anymore...
Let me put it this way: where are the ladies who still wear Opium, Shalimar, and Cinnabar???
Please speak up ☝️
Hehe.. 😊 I still really love wearing Cinnabar.. Opium was.. well, let's leave that aside.. and Shalimar is saturated for me, like all the old Guerlains..
Ciara.. mhh, Halston.. mhh, Tabu.. mhh, Coco.. mhh, Cabochard.. mhh, Calèche.. mhh.. those perfumers are crazy!! 🌺🐦
At some point, the wind will blow in a different direction again! Definitely. And someday, the day will come when IFRA regulates the use of ethyl maltol - I've already chilled a bottle of sparkling wine just in case ;)
Definitely not my scent either. At least you don't have to display the **beautiful** bottle now 😜
Great association, I can relate.
But now I can't stop imagining Janeway smelling like gummy bears, help! 😄
This omnipresent trend towards intensely sweet and often quite overpowering scents is increasingly annoying and boring me. I notice it even more in the "niche" area...
Funny, I just started watching Star Trek: Enterprise from 2001 again too. I thought Discovery was great as well 👏
It's true, you can't compare them, but they all have their own charm.
I don't know the scent, but gummy bears really put me off.
