Sunset in Late Summer…

Bois Doré is for me “The Hotel New Hampshire” by John Irving. Bois Doré is for me my youth in the 90s.

Back then at 16. My cousin recommended the book to me. Everything my cousin from the big city had to recommend couldn't be bad. She quoted with youthful depth the line “Stay away from open windows.” It was a code of connection for us.

The story is insane and melancholic. Things that shouldn't exist find their place as if it were natural. Everything is just right as it is. The world is naively simple and at the same time so complex. A fairytale dream. One lies under a tree in the sunset of late summer and dozes off. The world blurs. Dream-lost, one surrenders. To what is and what could be, what should be.

All of this is Bois Doré for me. My long-forgotten youth that slumbers within me. Carefreeness paired with world-weariness. It is warm, spicy, profound, a little sweet, but at the same time light and carefree.

At my feet lies my old cat. He is a bit demented. He enjoys life. The now and here. I don’t know how much longer we two can spend time together. That makes me deeply sad because I can't imagine a world without him. But right now it is beautiful. He and I. Enveloped by Bois Doré. Stay away from open windows!

So beautifully written! For me, this book was more quirky and odd, but I also felt that sense of "carefree mixed with world-weariness" when I was 16, or I would describe it that way now. I'm curious about the scent now. I wish you a lovely time with your cat. Enjoy it! 😘
