The Oasis
The sky red from hot sand, a shimmer in the air,
Imprints in the desert sand, I must not get lost.
The heat is dry, the sun scorches my head,
One stays sane when chewing black pepper.
Apples upon apples our camel caravan has loaded,
The sun caramelizes the fruits, the camels leave droppings.
Hot wind caresses the cheeks, the oasis is not far away,
The palms already on the horizon, the muezzin screams down from the tower.
Warmly welcomed by a veil of white flowers,
Oud in thick clouds, cheesy and hardly to be valued in gold.
Covered by freesias and jasmine, we bathe in the hot pool,
Lotioned and wrapped up, we relax under iris blankets.
Nestled in the finest sheets, clean, powdery scented, soft,
Vanilla-musk fluff caresses the tired nerves and relaxes immediately.
Amber-smudged logs of the finest sandalwood blaze in the fireplace,
Relaxation for the weary bones, with the wish never to move again.
Fin.

Widians Al Wasl, or Gold I, was once again one of the somewhat unexpected discoveries of the year for me - but on the unexpectedly good side. In the first minutes, Al Wasl opens rather delicately and reserved. A fine pinch of pepper without significant sharpness, sweet caramelized apples, and a hint of fine oud. Over time, the volume increases slightly and a veil of white flowers settles over the previous notes. I find it quite difficult to identify the exact flowers here, but I suspect freesia, jasmine, and iris. The floral veil deceives for a few minutes with a rather innocent scent, but it cannot mask the truly intense oud. Dark, animalistic, and slightly cheesy waves of this wonderful wood wash through the veil, ensuring that you won't forget it quickly. Over time, Al Wasl becomes increasingly powdery and more and more vanilla in an unsweetened form comes through, until you finally have a beautiful musk base with a significant oud note in front of you. Just as Al Wasl is special, it is also quite unique, and I can imagine that the blend of many flowers, dense musk, and cheesy oud may not appeal to everyone. For me, it ranks among the candidates of unique fragrances that I like, but which are not candidates for purchase.

The apples were transported in the camels' saddlebags. ;)
