I admit, I bought into the marketing of the brand; the beautiful bottles, the glycerin encasing, and the musical pieces that come along with the Piel, Kosai, and Kapsel releases are all lovely. But ultimately, in terms of scent, this could have been an Aesop release for half the money to me. It’s up to the buyer to decide whether the added mysticism is worth it. As a collectable I would love to own a variety of the Arpa fragrances, but given the price point and my own financial priorities I will unfortunately have to pass.
As for the scent, I get the mintiness/sharpness/somewhat peppery scent of shiso, the iris, and incense. I am not sure I am getting any of the described hay in the top notes, which I was excited about and sad to have missed. There is some added ‘warmth’ in the drydown too, but it’s subtle. It’s not a loud or strong fragrance: it’s pretty, polite, and I would compliment anyone wearing it. Personally, as mostly a peppery iris with subtle incense to my nose, the scent on its own just doesn’t excite me enough. That said, the shiso note is definitely a unique addition that I am glad to have experienced. Besides, I think the Arpa brand encourages to look beyond the scent alone, and the full package is certainly well-considered and unique.
