Somehow gourmand?
I came across Gris Charnel because of the interesting-sounding top note. Especially because I'm a big fan of tea and figs.
So I ordered a bottle and tested it straight away.
Unfortunately, the start did not live up to my expectations.
It is a very balanced interplay between fig, tea and cardamom. Not so special for my taste for this very reason.
The fig has a fruity sweetness and slight acidity at the beginning, which is rather pleasant. The tea and cardamom then provide a spicy base. However, I find this is nowhere near as strong as many say.
After the "boring disappointment" at the beginning, a really wonderful drydown follows.
From the top note, the cardamom lingers a little.
The sweetness of the fig remains, but the acidity slowly fades. I think this is what many perceive as coconut in combination with tonka and sandalwood.
Surprisingly, the iris is not so powdery, which is why the tonka bean and sandalwood form a really creamy foundation.
The "remnants" of the fig, which have now taken on the typical slightly milky-sweet character, make the drydown somehow really gourmand.
Cardamom and vetiver also have their fingers in the pie and provide a very, very light spicy warmth which makes the creaminess really delicious.
What I find really commendable is that the drydown (although it is so interesting) loses almost nothing of its sillage and also has a relatively good longevity.
In conclusion, perhaps one can say that Gris Charnel is unisex but has slightly feminine tendencies. But my opinion is just wear what you like (:
I'll wear it from now on too
