La Grande - available at a proud price and worth every mark
Hardly anyone will know La Grande who did not grow up in the former GDR. And even there, not everyone knew it, because it was only available for a lot of money at Exquisit. Exquisit stores were boutiques for those who wanted and could spend their East Marks on overpriced clothes and cosmetics. Away from the KONSUM or HO department stores, where everything was the same. Affordable, but often far from fashion, style, and taste.
So those who had it, could. I still remember that it started for me in the 9th grade with the shower gel. I received it for my 16th birthday. Today, some may not understand that this was something special. That even shower gel was rather rare in the GDR. It wasn't until the mid-80s that a few varieties became available, and they quickly sold out. When we went to sports, to the swimming pool, we always took these plastic soap boxes with us, usually with soap that you would return to the drugstore today, because you could at most guess the perfume in it. Blessed is he who once received a LUX soap or Fa or CD from relatives.
Or the one who received La Grande shower gel for their birthday. But the shower gel didn't last forever, and even at Exquisit, where this shower gel, I believe I remember, cost around 27.50 marks (with an average income of 1,200 marks), it wasn't always available.

But the scent accompanied me on first dates, through heartbreak, as well as on the first moped rides, in the cinema (don't even ask what movies we watched, but the ticket was, I believe, 50 pfennigs) just as much as during exams and family celebrations.
I would give a lot to be able to smell it again today. Today I regret that I didn't keep a bottle. The black one was the variant for men, the white one for women.
Today, perhaps everything is hard to understand, where one has Roja, Clive Christian, and Creed in the cupboard - but it was my La Grande!
