A More Refined Patrick...
Frank No. 2 goes on with a blast of very green bergamot citrus with a plum undertone. In the heart the plum-laced bergamot remains, now joined by what can best be described as a fine cognac liqueur accord that has hints of various well-blended spices with aromatic lavender that comes off as almost herbal in its implementation remaining through the dry-down. Frank No. 2's base which melds with the remaining aromatics from the heart is comprised primarily of a blend of fir based resin and multiple woods coupled with light musk that does not have most of the animalic qualities usually associated with it. Projection and longevity are both very good to excellent.

Frank No. 2 is a very difficult scent to describe. It is very aromatic with a dry boozy undertone driven by its lavender, bergamot, cognac and coniferous resin notes in particular. I hear it compared to Chanel's Allure Homme by many others but I confess I do not see that relation at all. If anything, the closest scent I can think of to Frank No. 2 is Patrick from Fragrances of Ireland. Frank No. 2 is certainly no clone and the two smell very different, but their aromatic concepts occupy a similar space in my opinion (and I prefer Frank No.2). What I *do* know is Frank No. 2 smells very good and is an extremely refined and well-polished effort that should be on anyone's buy list if they are looking for a classy easy to wear aromatic at its relatively low price point of $65 for a 65ml bottle, earning a strong 3.5 stars out of 5.

FRANK NO. 2 by Frank Los Angeles
Frank Los Angeles is a small but significant boutique perfume house that opened in Los Angeles in 2004. Their current selection consists of three fragrances: Frank, their debut fragrance released in 2004, Frank No. 2 released the following year, and Frank No. 3 in 2008. This house relishes the process of small batch production and does it quite well. Each of Frank Los Angeles' perfumes are hand-crafted. The proof seems to be in the pudding, or bottle in this case. I have found Frank Los Angeles to be interesting and somewhat a surprise in the quality of their scents. All three of their fragrances are masculine in attitude, so be forewarned.

Frank No. 2 opens with brazen bergamot that is entwined with fresh lavender. A touch of spicy coriander gives the brisk and herbal opening a unique savory masculine twist. The opening transitions from herbal with a touch of spice, to an astonishing heart of boozy, rich cognac with sappy resinous overtones. The heart is more mature and less buoyant in temperament. Frank No. 2 has a fruity, sweet side comprised of plum and earthy patchouli that give the heart added complexity. The patchouli plays assistant to the cognac by moderating its boozy nature and making it less ephemeral. A subtle coffee essence brews slowly and quietly in the base, coupled with woods that are dry and aromatic in nature. White musk takes a silent position in the base and adds an odd, nonessential cleanliness.

There is no doubt that Frank No. 2 was intended as a masculine fragrance. Perhaps I can detect a unique familiarity with many masculine fragrances of days gone by. The classic virile structure of spice, herbs and woods, makes this fragrance one that might seem unoriginal. I find it quite refreshing that an inexpensive eau de toilette lasts so long. The bottle and its packaging are understated at best, but perfect for the content within. I realized quite quickly that Frank No. 2, with its surprising character, earns a well-deserved seat in my fragrance collection.

A better version of Michael, by Michael Kors
I was lucky enough to find a bottle of this on Ebay UK around 7 years ago.
I remember it being quite boozy and heavy on the patchouli and spices! :)
At this point in my fragrance journey, i was buying and selling a lot! If i never sold anything in my time, i would have well over 500 bottles! As it stands i have around 250. Anyway, back to the review. Not long after acquiring Frank No2 i picked up a bottle of Michael by Michael Kors and decided i didn't need both.. So stupidly I sold Frank No2. The reasoning was that Michael was discontinued, so i thought it would be wise to keep hold of that one!
Fast forward a few years and I am still kicking myself i let Frank No2 go! I will admit that Frank No2 is better than Michael by MK, and if i am ever lucky enough to stumble across a bottle in the future, i will snap it up without any hesitation! The bottle i had was the original bottle design, i just hope they didn't butcher it with reformulation when they updated the packaging.

Whoever does not have a house now will no longer build one
Whenever I enter a perfume shop while traveling - even if I have been to that place before - I like to ask about 'local producers'. In the large department stores, hardly anything interesting comes to light, but in smaller shops, it almost always does. So, about two weeks ago, I discovered the previously unknown brand Frank Los Angeles at the Scentbar in Hollywood. Frank currently has three fragrances - rather soberly named 'No. 1', 'No. 2', and 'No. 3'. This one, No. 2, is my favorite.

'Whoever does not have a house now will no longer build one' is so wonderfully melancholic and sober in Rilke - and that was exactly my association when 'experiencing' Frank No. 2, immediately and only that one: a house. In the middle of Hollywood, in shorts, outside twenty-eight degrees and palm trees. A house. Not large. Away from the city. Warm walls made of raw wood. A hearth fire. Wool blankets and earthenware dishes. Children and dogs. Dancing dust in the morning light. Your hair against my hair. Outside the world, in here us. A house. Our house.

Despite its rather extensive list of ingredients, Frank No. 2 is an elegantly simple fragrance. Unexcited and, by nature, down-to-earth. It has the warmth of a family breakfast, hints of fruits, coffee, and fresh bread. Along with a skin accord or even two, the smooth surface of the softwood chairs and the rough fabric of the cushions. Despite its apparent simplicity, Frank No. 2 is an exceedingly interesting fragrance - I almost believed I could hear the clattering of dishes, the scraping of chair legs, and the laughter of children.

In conclusion, in the complete lines of the last stanza of Rilke's famous 'Autumn Day':
'Whoever does not have a house now will no longer build one.
Whoever is alone now will stay alone for a long time,
will wake, read, write long letters
and will wander restlessly back and forth in the avenues
when the leaves drift.'

A Bit of Niche
Since Giorgio Beverly Hills, I suspected that a fragrance from the USA was usually an olfactory bomb, especially when it included L.A. in the name. Small brands, Hilfiger, and the like gradually discovered profitable mediocrity, and I laid aside my pretensions. However, in recent years, more unusual scents have been emerging from the land of unlimited possibilities, for which one often has to bring their credit card to the boiling point. But if one absolutely must have such a gem, one can gladly forgo one or two (weeks) lunches.

However, the No. 2 from Frank in L.A. is not quite so "niche." Yet, one cannot call this fragrance fundamentally solid either. I see it somewhere between worlds, a bit of a niche, so to speak. Of course, one could lament that the fragrance tries to please everyone and ends up pleasing no one, but that is not the case here. Fans of spices, balsam, and wood will find their joy here (if they also like plum).

No. 2 starts on my skin quite fresh with a fine soapy note, which I attribute to the coriander. Well, I thought, a modest men's fragrance, unprepared for what was to come.

With the heart note, No. 2 then takes a steep curve towards the lush-spicy, with a lovely plum note in tow. Although coffee and cognac have been used here, I find the scent delicious but not gourmand.

The fragrance does not take any more drastic turns but finds its well-deserved calm in a beautiful creamy-woody base.

I wouldn't necessarily buy this fragrance for myself, but if I received it as a gift, I would spray it wildly around me.

Today, 13 years later, it is completely mainstream. And I wouldn't want to wear it anymore.

Crisp masculine aromatic top notes. Plum & cognac show up to the somewhat formal party to provide a slightly sweet, yet smooth undertone.

After a fine citrus opening, an unexpectedly spicy-fine coffee-plum-patch mix follows, meeting musk-woods in the base.
