The Scream
Francis Bacon was a painter born on October 28, 1909, in Dublin. His preferred art movements were Surrealism, Expressionism, and Cubism. His art can also be seen in the Museum of Modern Art. His paintings are very disturbing, grotesque, and sometimes obscene. But despite all that, they are incredibly captivating and charismatic. One of his most famous paintings features a screaming pope depicted sitting on a chair between two halves of meat. The mouth opened in a scream is a very distinctive feature of his paintings, as is the very meaty and somewhat dark color palette. His self-portraits show him with deformed facial features and frightening, surreal shapes and colors. Francis Bacon led a very artistic and dubious life, among others in London and Berlin. He was very fond of alcohol and all vices and made no secret of it. He frequented dubious and shady pubs, bars, and venues. He was a gambler and drinker, and let's just say,...open to everything! Francis Bacon died on April 28, 1992, in Madrid. His works are highly valued in the art world and fetched immense sums.
Maurizio Piazzi and Francesco Gini, the artists behind Homo Elegans, have created a monument to Francis Bacon with Quality of Flesh. The perfume presents a cross-section of his life and art. A life full of ups and downs. A life filled with pleasure, vice, and excess, but also sadness and loneliness, as his partner passed away very early. It also reflects the great charismatic personality of Francis Bacon. One of the greatest surrealists of his time. Quality of Flesh is an olfactory painting of his soul and his art.
The Scent
Having read the preceding text and the fragrance notes, one knows that this scent is not necessarily humorous and cheerful. Quality of Flesh begins with a bitter-herb and alcoholic juniper note. A note that conveys the impression of gin. The still young green and black pepper accord further enhances this impression. This soon recedes, and the scent rapidly shifts into a tarry, turpentine-like leather note. An oily, rough leather makes itself known. It still feels almost very fresh, but over time it seems to become more worn and older. Patchouli mixes in. Moist and earthy, it weaves through the leather, adding depth and darkness. Creamy styrax and waxy benzoin make the leather appear even more worn. All three animalic notes, such as civet, castoreum, and costus, are not individually recognizable because, in my opinion, they almost appear together with a wilting, sweet-green daffodil. A four-part constellation that breathes life into Quality of Flesh's bitter and excessive existence. Unrestrained, wild, animalistic, and warm-human. Quality of Flesh smells of life, of a very lived, artistic life. One can almost absorb the life of Francis Bacon olfactorily. His endless passion for living, loving, and painting.
Conclusion
Quality of Flesh is an incredibly charismatic, captivating, and engaging scent. It is a journey into the life, work, and art of Francis Bacon, one of the greatest surrealists of his time. What I have written may sound off-putting to many, but it is not so because everything fits together perfectly and harmonizes. Quality of Flesh is a very attractive, characterful, and, in my opinion, very engaging perfume. All creations from Homo Elegans have a very high density of fragrance materials. They are meant to reflect the strong personality and character of the person they represent. Therefore, it is very difficult to pass by a scent from Homo Elegans without noticing it. If I were to create a signature scent for my own life, it would have come very close to this perfume. Perhaps that is why it feels so familiar to me. A perfume could hardly be more charismatic!
"We are born with a scream; we come into life with a scream, and perhaps love is a mosquito net between the fear of life and the fear of death."
