Common Floral Musk
After a 35-year hiatus of putting out her first and only perfume, California, Jacklyn Smith, celebrity and former star of the 70s US hit TV series Charlie's Angels, introduced her second fragrance, Jackie, on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) at the end of 2024.
Unlike David Bowie's widow, famous model Iman, whose perfume, Love Memoir, had a story to tell as it was a tribute to her love for David, there were no big marketing campaign around Jackie. Outside of a few blips in the news and an article here and there on various perfume websites that would be missed by most of the general public, there was no fanfare over it. As a result, this doesn't seem to have sold well outside of HSN and prices quickly nosedived from the $75 high on that site, to now a few months later, under $30 on secondhand sites like eBay. Honestly though, I am not sure that even if there were a big marketing campaign it would have fared any better because while pretty, there is nothing here that makes it a standout even amongst the celebrity perfume class.
Overall, it is a pretty fragrance of nondescript florals on a musky base. I often hear people on perfume sites comparing this to Chanel No. 5 and I honestly don't get that. The only thing they have in common are both are categorized as floral aldehydes, though I think even that is wrong. This appears to have been mischaracterized by the manufacturer as a floral aldehyde when it is in fact, a musk fragrance. It brings to mind many inexpensive commercial musk fragrances on the market today like a Jovan or Bodyshop, for example, and as far as the scent, has more in common with Elizabeth Arden's True Love and Dana's Love's Baby Soft and other fragrances in that soft innocent genre than something as dynamic and polarizing as No. 5.
While there is an audience for this type of fragrance, I think there are just too many fragrances out there in a similar vein, some that even smell much better, at a much cheaper price for this to even make an impact. I suspect that the price of this fragrance will continue to spiral downward eventually reflecting the price of most inexpensive musk fragrances on the market. It might even be discontinued in the future, if it hasn't been already, considering that new bottles are now showing up on discount sites. That's too bad, because Jacklyn Smith is a lovely person, and I really wish this had been a successful endeavor for her, but it is just way overpriced for what it is. I hope she has better luck next time. For me, when I do feel like wearing an inexpensive musk fragrance, I'd rather wear White Musk from Jovan or Body Fantasies.
