God of Our Fathers - Of Smoke, Honey, and Legends!
I became aware of the brand while browsing and searching for fragrances that work with honey but are not just sticky sweet. The fragrance pyramid of this scent caught my attention immediately and made me curious, but by the time I discovered the scent, it was unfortunately already sold out. Thus began a long and quite nerve-wracking search for my "white whale." After some searching, a Parfumo provided me with a whole sample package from the brand Nebiru, as he had already walked the path I was on, and in this package was also a sample of "God of Our Fathers."
I am still new to the world of artisanal fragrances, and apart from a few of the well-known "big" brands, I had now come across a brand that was still in its infancy. And what can I say? The scents were bold, daring, and honest.
Bold because here facets meet that one might not initially consider working together. Daring because new paths are taken without treading the beaten track. That requires quite a bit of idealism. And honest because the scents have a connection - a connection that is not immediately recognizable. One must look behind the scent and truly give perfumer Frederic Gieselbach the chance to speak to you through the fragrance.
Some scents have stories that make you thoughtful or even bring a smile to your face, which makes the brand even more appealing, as the fragrances thus have a "soul" for me and are not just a flat cash grab.
Now, to the scent itself: God of Our Fathers, whose bottle design I really love, creates for me, right upon application, more than just a sillage. It creates an image. In my mind's eye, I see a fleet of Viking longships sailing out into the open sea, and behind them, the monastery of Lindisfarne is burning. The attentive reader will have recognized that we are in the year 793!
The smell of incense and mead (this is where the dark and very photorealistic honey comes into play) hangs heavily in the air. As dark and epic as this image appears, the composition unfolds on my skin even more powerfully and fascinatingly.
This scent is larger than its individual components and much larger than the image I have in mind. Yes, I would even go so far as to say that the shadow of the one wearing this scent grows to nearly 2 meters and stands behind you like a Viking.
The scent bears the name "God of Our Fathers" not without reason. It draws from something primal, something that is intangible and has long been forgotten in our modern times. Nevertheless, it is a scent that I wish I had more of. For me, it is proof that a vision in the hands of the right perfumer can be more than just a fragrance. An almost forgotten legend that has been rediscovered.
