Courage, Memory, and the Power of Scents

Scents are often memories, awakening feelings and experiences within us. A brief whiff takes us back to the past. To places, to people, and moments. Scents sometimes guard the stories and secrets of our past.

With this curiosity, I approached Frederic, the founder, creator, and perfumer behind Nebiru Parfvms. I wanted to know what story lies behind "Zora XQ | Nebiru Parfvms."

It carries the story of a person whom Frederic knows personally. A story of escape, separation, reunion, courage, and arriving in a new, safe world. Of a young girl who bravely freed herself from a desperate situation and, with this courage, saved her parents' lives. Her name is Zora.

The opening is a clear, fresh impulse with Calabrian bergamot and Chinese ginseng. I can immediately smell both. Alongside, there are many spicy notes, likely attributed to Nag Champa and Shamama Attar. It all reads very high-quality from the fragrance notes list, but I had to ask Google what I was smelling. I knew Nag Champa from the Tollwood Festival and incense sticks, but Shamama Attar was new to me. I really enjoy such things and find it exciting to understand, explore, and experience a fragrance.

Also, the Crimean rose from 1987. A little fun fact: it was actually discovered in a shed in Crimea. It integrates into the entire scent like a rose from a forgotten garden. Not prominent, but always present. Alongside the rose, a floral veil envelops the entire fragrance journey, like floral spirits. They entwine and dance around the whole progression.

And since I recently had the fun of smelling through my brother's entire botanical collection. A hard, tougher landscaper, I believe I can identify: it's jasmine and lilies for me. Not just the flowers but the whole plant. Subtly green and toxic. I attribute the floral experience to the Thai blue lotus absolute.

It brings something special to the fragrance progression, which is otherwise so powerful and complex due to the two types of oud. In the base, it is mossy, balsamic. Depth from fermented resin and dark forest honey, carried on dark woods. The animalic aspect of the oud is very quiet and beautifully woven. For me, it is hardly perceptible. (But I'm not a benchmark)

So everything comes together very harmoniously for me. Zora XQ is not a fragrance for quiet and meditative moments, yet it is a gentle but present olfactory experience. Carried by the special ingredients, Zora XQ will be able to fully unfold its strength on cooler days. I have been able to test it now in the warm, rainy days, but I am already looking forward to when Zora XQ will truly bloom in the fall.

What always impresses me about Nebiru Parfvms are the high-quality ingredients used in the fragrances. Frederic could surely tell a unique story about each ingredient. I am impressed by what one person has built here. A lot of heart and quality has been invested.

"Zora XQ is a perfume that takes possession, shifts, rewires."
This is how Frederic describes his creation. Perhaps therein lies the connection to Zora's life story. A path that changes perspectives, shifting entrenched boundaries. For me, it is thus a fragrance experience that not only remains on the skin but also resonates in the mind and feelings.

I'm always fascinated by what scents can evoke in us. There's often a whole world inside a bottle like that.
