do better, girl
If anything, I have to thank this little bottle for igniting a discussion about ethical consumerism. Like it or not, we vote with our pocketbook. I imagine I have naively given money to some abhorrent people – and probably still do (Amazon?) – but when you build a brand around a public individual rather than a faceless entity (Brandy Melville, Lululemon) or a heritage label (Chanel, VW) they will be subject to more direct scrutiny, even if their creators may be culpable of greater sins.
But this is not the victim of a keyboard-happy burn-the-witch crusade. This is an adult vying for your attention and money, whilst actively demeaning the communities she operated within. (And, as of her latest rebuttal, totally without apology). So I suppose I also need to thank Mason Dixon Quest for having a public twitter. Had she not, I probably would have ponied up the cash. Feel for the noses behind this line and the niche vendors/creators that helped support Richard Nixon Fest’s launch, because they may have also been unaware of her attitudes.
As far as the scent – I got it as a free sampler from my local niche store and loved it enough to have the full bottle sitting in my online cart. Fortunately, all this came to light before I could pull the trigger. Credits to Yann Vasnier; I wish this fragrance wasn’t sullied by its figurehead for me now. Still looking for a cathedral incense vanilla, but very grateful for all the recommendations the community has fielded and the new connections forged during this discourse.
And for everyone who might say “ma’am, this is a fragrance forum,” yeah, it is. But fragrance is art. And all art is political. (One only need to google a bit about a particular fragrance forum's politics to read more). It’s a $170 bottle of luxury water. I can afford to not put it into the pocket of Clout Infinite Jest. And based on her most recent statements, she has already chosen her future consumer base. I wish her all the luck in engendering queer embrace, gender equity, and celebration of the arts in that sphere.
And c’mon? Wishing death on COVID patients? You’re not an edgelord. You’re just sad.
Do better, girl.
