Moi? Mais bien sur ...
This is most probably THE perfume that set me off on my lifelong love of (almost) all things fragrant.
If not, it at the very least claims a place in my heart as my very first love, which I happened upon by sheer accident.
For the anecdote, a girl friend and I went to a Parisian bistrot for lunch many moons ago, and as we walked towards our table, I caught a whiff of something otherworldly and utterly delectable from a lady seating with her male companion.
I am an inquisitive creature by nature and so, this is how I met Je Reviens.

The formulation of the time shall remain a mystery but I first acquired what is seen as a drugstore fragrance, and much later on, this present reincarnation in its Couture form, which is meant to resemble the original.
Many perfumistas lament the apparent massacre of the vintage (of which I have no experience).
Shoot me down if you must, but I very much enjoy both el cheapo and this one, and cannot discern any major difference between the two.

It is a perfume from a bygone era with something majestic and magical about it.
An aura of nostalgia, that is soothing, comforting … and blue.
Powder is the name of the game and it conveys images of ladies’ boudoirs and satin gowns.
A perfect accompaniment to a lazy Sunday reclining on a chaise longue, reading the works of Baudelaire whilst puffing on a cigarette held by a very chic tortoiseshell holder.

We're back... and back again
This newer version of the classic from 1932 was launched in 2005.
The old "Je reviens" has also been reformulated countless times. Unfortunately, the couture variant does not completely convince me, although it exudes a fine retro charm.
The best part of "Je reviens" is the drydown, which I find very pleasant in its powderiness. However, the top notes and the heart are not quite as successful. "Je reviens" is exactly the fragrance I would describe as somewhat "madamish." In a positive sense, one could also call it wonderfully nostalgic. Like a faded postcard from days gone by. Perhaps this is due to the combination of aldehydes and ylang-ylang with vetiver, which together somehow create a strange incense note for me, even though incense does not appear in the pyramid.
"Je reviens" is a good remake that I don’t wear often, but I still like to have it in my collection.
Moreover, the bottle is fantastic!

about the bridge
Whoever approaches one of the great classics from the first half of the last century as a perfumer today, with the intention of modernizing it or even reviving it, needs, in addition to passion, expertise, and a sense of touch, above all one thing: courage.
For the number of followers who have found their Holy Grail, their olfactory ultimate in the original version of a fragrance is large, for whom any change, any removal or addition is tantamount to sacrilege, no matter how carefully a reformulation may occur in each individual case - at best, a dilution is lamented, at worst, a castration.
I too have felt badly cheated, so to speak, when a fragrance that had once presented itself to me in all its splendor was now merely a shadow of its former self, accompanied by a confidently stated: "But of course, the scent has remained unchanged since its creation!"
For they do not know...

Whoever was responsible for "Je Reviens Couture" at Worth did not attempt to serve new wine in old bottles.
No hidden reformulation (of a presumably already reformulated legend), at most a kind of flanker has emerged in this bridge from the interwar period into a new millennium, whose inhabitants, despite all the fast-paced consumption, have not (yet?) completely lost touch with all values, all roots, all the wonderful things of the past, who can still differentiate between quality and quantity and sometimes consciously choose to pause, turn back, and reach for the past.
Without caring a whit whether that is "cool" or not.

It took me a long time to discover "Je Reviens" and fall in love with this cool, ultra-clean floral chypre with its expansive yet never overwhelming, suffocating presence, which is so idiosyncratic and so profound, that does not flaunt its eroticism yet turns all heads in one direction.
It does not think of making promises, yet holds them all the more.
It requires personality and maturity, a man or a woman, relaxed and confident, who know the game and its rules - and break them with a smile.
Could "Je Reviens Couture" measure up to this oversized role model?

A strong appearance: Powerful-soapy aldehydes rise from a swirl of green-floral accords, very cool, very clean - as sparkling clear as a morning at the beginning of spring, delicate green and first flowers still crystallized by the night’s frost.
From the very first moment, "Je Reviens Couture" names its mother and father, its home and seal, leaving no doubt about its origin - only to soon strike surprisingly soft notes, taking back all force without losing body.
Like a melody that, after a stormy start, produces softer, gentler, more tender tones, "Je Reviens Couture" now hugs and caresses my skin and nose, teasing with citrusy accents and momentarily irritating with synthetic peaks, which I attribute to the plastic sprayer of my decant.
Cocooned in these feathery veils, I am unprepared for the renewed "Forte, fortissimo!" emerging from opulent-dry lilac, silver-powdery iris root, and finely pointed daffodil, beginning to pearl from my skin, surrounded by oakmoss.
This interplay of cool and clear, gentle and harsh nuances is intoxicating, dry and powdery and almost metallic, present in my vicinity without flooding the entire room, warming up, becoming more delicate and transparent over time, yet never watery, never weak, never denying its roots.
A sprout from the best house, a child of its parents and a child of its time, preserving traditions with concessions to today, to tomorrow - possessing character and that unspeakable, inexplicable something that is so attractive.
Cool indeed.

PS: Cristalle - thank you!

A successful flanker of the great classic from Worth. Aldehyde-soapy opening, bright, slightly spicy floral bouquet...

The old Je reviens is clearly recognizable, but drawn even softer and more powdery. This scent has nothing to do with Chypre for me.

Frederic Worth, one of the first great couturiers, a beautiful spicy floral scent, very elegant - jasmine, orange blossom, and musk.

Classically elegant, cool summer chypre for status-conscious pearl necklace wearers. Ladylike and old-fashioned in the best sense.
