Can We Stop With the Haughty Attitude?

Can We Stop With the Haughty Attitude?

Hey there, it's me (28F) who's back again, this time with a rant. I wasn't planning on polluting Parfumo with a negative rant, but I have to do it to get it out of my system.

A few weeks ago, as I was perusing Reddit and subreddits about perfumes, I stumbled upon someone who was showing off their collection to the community. There was nothing particular about it, but the OP gushed about his perfumes and the collection he was building up. I found that particularly endearing, but his perfumes were oriented towards men and did not concern me. I was about to back out of his post, when I saw that another user had left a vitrolic comment, stating that his collection was not a collection, but a copy paste of generic fragrance made for the mass and curated by brainless influencers.

Disc scratch.

Before we continue, let me remind you what the word collection means: ''a group of objects of one type that have been collected by one person or in one place.'' By this definition, OP definitely had a collection. I couldn't believe another member of this community was shitting on somebody's beloved collection.

Recently, there's also been some echo of negative opinions on other people's choice of fragrance on Parfumo which I find absolutely sad. I just can't wrap my head around why those negative people like to bash other people's collection or choice of fragrance. Whether you love niche, designer, clones, dupes, or anything in between, what does it do to you if someone else loves something you don't? If there wasn't a public for those types of perfumes, they wouldn't exist. May I also add the fact that not everybody has the financial means to acquire niche, designer or more high-end perfumes? I find myself being part of the privileged ones who are able to buy more generic perfumes, but also designer and private collection fragrance. Doesn't mean my collection is better than someone who collects - let's say - Bath & Body mists.

You are totally allowed to dislike a perfume or to have a negative association with one, but to place people who love certain perfumes in the same basket (or the same stereotype) when you know nothing about them? I'm sick and tired of this. For the people who say they're tired of seeing the same perfumes pop up because influencers hype more generic perfumes made for the mass... Well, I'm sorry, but we all have to start somewhere. That somewhere can be your local store, your local CVS, Shopper's Drug Market, Sephora, TJ Maax, B&B, whatever. For example, I started out with Sephora fragrance and Shopper's Drug Market perfumes, but I'm now slowly branching out into what Etiket sells (which are niche, more private lines of perfumes). Doesn't mean I've left my more generic perfumes behind. I still love them because their scents are lovely, but also because they're a reminder of the beginning of this journey. They helped me determine what fragrance type I like and dislike.

A hobby is for everyone. People are different: some love more generic perfumes, some prefer more niche ones. There's a public for every type of perfumes out there and if you don't like a certain type, group, brand or whatever, please stop raining on other people's parade. You're allowed to share your opinion of course, but please have some respect. Be more benevolent towards others and their collection. You don't know how they got their fragrance and what meaning lies behind those scents.

Rant over.

Excellent article, and I agree with you whole-heartedly - thank you for writing this! 👏
It's part of why I love Parfumo so much - I haven't seen snobbery be as much of an issue here, as what I see in other areas of the fragrance world (like what you mentioned observing).
There are plenty of high-quality fragrances produced by Bath & Body Works, etc. What matters is not how much was spent or how "rare" a find a fragrance is, but rather that the individual wearer loves it. Period!

Agree with you 100%. I have a huge collection with a lot of vintages. Someone described my wardrobe on another perfume site as pissy old lady perfumes. This coming from someone whose entire wardrobe is made up of every popular sugary, oud, molecule fragrance on the market where it was clear they were into status symbols. 🤣 I doubt they ever tried a vintage fragrance in their life. I also had another incident with a self-described perfume snob. She wouldn't deem to wear a cheap, drug store fragrance. So, I sent her unlabeled sample of Parfums de Coeur Body Fantasies Signature Fresh White Musk, and she was blown away telling me how beautiful it was and wanting to know what it was. (Personally, I think it smells better than Serge Lutin's Clair de Musc, and it certainly performs better.) Anyway, she was shocked when I told her what it was and that she could pick up a bottle in any drugstore for under $10 USD. So, I think a lot of it has to do with ignorance.

Very well said. The snobbery is ridiculous. Preferring certain fragrances over others does not make anyone special or sophisticated or better in any way from anyone else. The fact we perceive scents differently is actually really cool- just in terms of basic human experiences with our senses.

I agree, to each his/ her own. Your hard-earned money, your personal preference, your freedom to choose what to collect.

Well, Reddit can be the worst, it's not a particularly safe space regarding comments... Communities are different on different platforms, in my experience - I wouldn't consider every perfumista in the world part of some sort of global community with any sort of rules or even mutual respect.
That being said, I agree with your point - people should be able to enjoy whatever the hell they like to smell as long as it's not hurting anybody 🤷‍♀️
And generally, it's just perfume, people should lighten up and not take themselves or their hobby so seriously 😁 It's supposed to be pleasant, that's the whole point 💐

I absolutely agree with you! I have a mini collection of perfumes and I am not so sure I will ever be a collector mainly for financial reasons and partly for the snobism that collectors sometimes have!
During the pandemic of the covid 19 I stumbled on a post on fbk that said "I have just got back from a house I was invited for tea and the owners instead of aniseptic gel at the entrance of their appartment they had five or six perfumes of Tom Ford for spraying your hands with and have them clean of bacteria."
This nouveau riche exhibitionism is Linda vulgar and rude I think.

I meant kinda vulgar.
But the automat dictionary here wrote Linda Vulgar. lol

It's baffling to me that some people think choosing to spend on a particular combination of aroma chemicals automatically makes them better or more well interesting than the rest of the world.

In every community centered on art and hobby there seem to be a good, old dose of elitism. I understand, many people have both good taste and the means to afford only the best (which again, as you said, is also always relative), but why, oh why there is the need of putting others down? What does it matter even if a product is going viral and 10 reviews a day are written about it here? Where is the problem? Different opinions and taste are ok, but putting others down is the worst. I would be mortified if that had been done to me, to the point of shying away from the comunity.
Please, everyone...always be kind, there is no reason why you should always tell the first thought that passes through your mind...ask yourself first how it may be recived.
There are actually people who start to develop hobby in order to overcome hardships or trauma, or to deepen their sense of self, in a therapeutic kinda of way, often it's not done just for knowledge or pleasure, so respect everyone 🙏
