The Holy Church Scents Committee

I'm looking for a still-burning church, crumbling; nothing clean about it, maybe some sweetness but very much undeniable church and burning wood and smoke and embers and ash and frankincense, myrrh.

Hope you all had/have a great summer and could rest a bit.During a small holiday trip, as I usually do, I visited as many churches as I could and tried to note down what I could smell. Yeah, weird activity, but to each their own!Speaking of that, what would "your" church smell like? Or what would be your church fragrance made of if you could create it? Greetings everyone ! I hope you are all doing well.Yesterday, I have received my latest purchase, L'orpheline. While I waited for it to be delivered, i've read various reviews about it, and many mentioned that it smelled like a church. This got me very excited of course. But knowing how suprising the works of Uncle Serge and Christopher can be, I took those reviews with a grain of salt. And thus comes the day the bottle is waiting for me in the postbox. I don't wait a second and spray it on myself. Magnificent scent, as always by Lutens, but to my nose it doesn't smell like a church at all. I would even say very far from it.So this popped a question: what makes a fragrance "church-y"? Is it necessarily the presence of incense? Or something else? The combination of various notes, or just our nose and personal experience of what a church or temple is supposed to smell like?Very often I happen to disagree with people who say that "X fragrance" smells like a church. Not all churches smell the same, of course, and there can be many interpretations of those scents, but what do you consider is the most important when it comes to fragrances mimicing a church?I've put some of my suggestions which I consider smelling like churches (not necessarily favourites), feel free to complete the list if you want or debate the churchiness !

Greetings everyone!What is your favourite church or incense fragrance? Why do you like it? Why is it great? For me, Rêve d'Ossian (2012) is the best and has been my signature scent. It has all the scents I remember from my childhood church. The tragedy is that I found this perfume very early in my journey into fragrances, so it is very difficult to find anything that matches it for me, but the quest for church fragrances continues.What about you?
