... Heist What about French Riviera by Mancera by the way? Wasn’t a huge fan. Smells like hairspray/sunscreen, and not in a good way. L’homme Idéal EDP is on my wish list, how does the Parfum compare? They are similar but "L'Homme Idéal (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" leans more into the benzaldehyde (think maraschino cherries/marzipan) and vanilla, while "L'Homme Idéal Parfum | Guerlain" is boozier from the amaretto plus more leathery, and doesn’t have that cherry overtone. More masculine in my opinion.

... ScentNebula I think I agree with this to an extent. For me it's more to do with figuring out what scent profiles/notes I like from a particular perfumer. I usually hate sandalwood, but when Pineward does it, it doesn't bother me at all. So I'll avoid anything with sandalwood UNLESS it's Pineward in which case I disregard that note when filtering down my options. I can totally see this. Each house (sometimes perfumer) has their own way of constructing an accord. Pineward tends to use a lot of naturals, so it might be that you don't mind real sandalwood oil (or at least the variant(s) Pineward uses) but there is some common aromachemical like santalol or javanol that are in most other sandalwood accords that you don't like. It's difficult to tell what a single note smells like if you haven't tried others from the same house/perfumer, much less figuring out how an entire fragrance smells!

... One I think that @Smirky missed is "Versace Man Eau Fraîche (Eau de Toilette) | Versace". Perfect mass-appealing dumb-reach summer scent in my opinion. As for gourmands, I think "Angels' Share (Eau de Parfum) | Kilian" is a fine choice. As long as you're sampling Kilians, I'd look into "Intoxicated | Kilian", "Gold Knight | Kilian" and "Old Fashioned | Kilian" as well, all three are great gourmand frags, coffee/cardamom, honey, and whisky/wheat respectively. I'd also recommend "Noir Extreme (Eau de Parfum) | Tom Ford" and "L'Homme Idéal Parfum | Guerlain" for other gourmand choices.

... With samples I don't really care since they're relatively cheap. If I haven't tried a particular house, I'll try to get a sample set of a good cross-section of their frags. And of brands I know and like, I'll try to keep up with all their new releases. Of the frags I sample that don't fall into those two categories, I'd say my hit rate is still low, around 50/50, since I really like to experiment and get out of my comfort zone. With blind buys I used to struggle a lot, and I pretty much swore off blind buying until last year. But since then it's been over 85% (1 miss in 7). Planning on doing at least one more blind buy this year ("Oud Luwak II | Areej Le Doré"), possibly two ("Bois d'Argent (Esprit de Parfum) | Dior") so we'll see if I can keep it up. I think the trick is buying based on the perfumer/house rather than the note pyramid and reviews. The note pyramid and reviews are more useful for eliminating perfumes I don't think I'd like rather than figuring out what I would like, in my opinion.

... "The Tragedy of Lord George | Penhaligon's" "Mojave Ghost (Eau de Parfum) | Byredo" "Synthetic Nature / Synthetic Jungle | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle" (I guess this got renamed? I like "Synthetic Jungle") "Angels' Share (Eau de Parfum) | Kilian" "Écrin de fumée | Serge Lutens" (clever play on words in French) My least favorite fragrance name is probably "Groove Xcape | Xerjoff"

... I wish there was a way to see all the users who follow you or give awards; not sure if it’s intentionally done like this or just oversight by the devs/not a high priority feature. I’m in the same boat, I know of a few people who follow me, as they tend to comment on statements and reviews, but 36 is a big number compared to the 3 or so likes I get per review. PS shoutout to whoever marks my reviews as “helpful,” I feel like lots of my reviews get the “helpful” or “very helpful” accolade and it’s mostly one user, whoever you are, you are a gentleman and a scholar 🫡

How do you store/organise your fragrances

... I use a bookshelf from Ikea and acrylic tiers from Amazon . It's in a corner of what we call the "family room," an addition to the house by a previous owner that's off to one side of the house. There is a bit of temperature variation as the A/C doesn't get in there as well as other parts of the house, but it's out of the humidity and sun at least.

The scent you disliked the most.

Perfume Discussions
... Most of the scents I dislike fall into two categories. Either they are just really REALLY boring flankers that smell like everything else in the department store, and on top of that, are not executed well, or they smell like an old man in a bath. The "old man in a bath" image that I get in my head I think is because there is something in these fragrances that smells like how they made soap 75 years ago, and my mind can't help but associate it with geriatrics trying to get clean. So for the first category my most hated are: "Defy Parfum | Calvin Klein" "Spicebomb Night Vision (Eau de Toilette) | Viktor & Rolf" "Y Le Parfum (2025) | Yves Saint Laurent" "Myslf | Yves Saint Laurent" "Valentino Uomo Born In Roma Extradose | Valentino" "Luna Rossa Ocean (Eau de Parfum) | Prada" Second category: "The Tragedy of Lord George | Penhaligon's" "Pelagos | Dusita" "Timbuktu | L'Artisan Parfumeur" "Le Gemme - Malakeos | Bvlgari" "Baptême du Feu | Serge Lutens" "Ambre Suprême | Les Indémodables" (last two are more grandma-potpourri kinds of scents but fit into the "can't imagine anyone under 80 wanting to smell like this" category) Also there are just scent profiles I can't stand and make me physically gag, most notably the "Babycat | Yves Saint Laurent" profile, which "Eau d'Ombré Leather | Tom Ford" is just a worse version of. "Sadonaso | Nasomatto" and "Fucking Fabulous / Fabulous (Eau de Parfum) | Tom Ford" (also the parfum version) both just smell horrible, like diapers.

Analysing Notes - Without smelling!

Perfume Discussions
... Yeah I'd agree with @Ursaw that it's more down to the house+perfumer than the actual notes. There are two issues I mainly have with note pyramids: 1. It's not apparent which notes/accords are the "main" ones. Sometimes you can glean this from how many notes there are of that type; i.e. a floral fragrance might have 4 or 5 floral notes, and the fragrance pyramid you provided has 4 animalic notes, making me feel like it's mainly an animalic fragrance. But sometimes this is not the case. For example, in your pyramid, maybe the black pepper/incense accord dominates, making it smell like "Velvet Incenso | Dolce & Gabbana". Or maybe the leather/vanilla making it smell like "Babycat | Yves Saint Laurent", and the animalics are just bit part players. It's unclear. 2. Houses/perfumers have their own take on each note/accord that smells quite different. An incense note for example, can be the rich full resinous material like in Amouage fragrances, e.g. "Interlude Man | Amouage" or "Memoir Man | Amouage", or it can be quite smoky, pungent like charred wood, found in many Tom Ford fragrances like "Ébène Fumé (Eau de Parfum) | Tom Ford" and "Black Lacquer | Tom Ford", or it can be light, airy, almost fresh, like in "Series 3: Incense - Avignon | Comme des Garçons" or "New Look | Dior". So if I'm blind buying a fragrance, I'm going to shop based on my previous experience with the perfumer and house, only using the pyramid as a very rough guide as to the vibe of the fragrance. I'd never buy anything blind just based on the pyramid with no experience with the house/perfumer; that's why it's so important for new/indie houses to have a way to sample their fragrances before buying in my opinion.

... I didn't really answer the question about the pie charts in my response, so I want to add that I use them, but mainly for more elucidation on what type of fragrance I'm looking at. For example, consider a fragrance with the following note breakdown: Top: Bergamot, Grapefruit Mid: Rose, Geranium Base: Sandalwood, Tonka Bean Is this fragrance going to be a soapy fougere-esque like "Casamorati - Mefisto | Xerjoff" or floral, powdery and sweet like "Coco Noir (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel"? Both have similar note breakdowns, but they smell entirely different. If you just showed me Coco Noir's note pyramid, I'd have no idea what direction it leaned. Of course you can sometimes look at the "main accords," Mefisto's is citrus-y/fresh while Coco Noir is floral/oriental, but sometimes even that can be misleading.

... Killsocket I actually use the traditional U.S. education grading system. A+ to F. I'm kind of in the same boat with the grading system. I consider everything below 6 to be a fail. My ratings are like a Bell curve with 7/7.5 as the peak. C average.

... The way you are describing ID verification reminds me of one time I was in Macy's with a salesperson hounding me, I went across the aisle to check out the women's fragrances and she exclaimed in a packed voice, "no, no those are the WOMEN'S FRAGRANCES!" 😂😂 It definitely shouldn't be like that, where anyone is actively trying to control what someone else wears. Or even restricting oneself from trying what could be a great fragrance. For me, notes aren't feminine or masculine, but there are associations, especially with more popular women's fragrances, that make me not want to wear certain fragrances. And not necessarily so I don't get weird looks or judged by society, but because it makes me feel uncomfortable in my own skin, the same way I would feel if I was wearing a skirt or a dress. It's just not me. A good example I have is with "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian". I used to wear it sometimes (shared it with my wife) and I think it is a completely unisex fragrance. Equal parts sweet and mossy. However, a female family member I see often started wearing it, and I couldn't shake the association. Not to mention loads of women I came across in public. I eventually stopped wearing it because of these associations. I don't think it's a bad thing or should be mourned, it just doesn't feel right to me to wear it.

... Since there is no separate rating for originality/creativity I have to bake it into the scent rating. 1-3.5: Either a) a scrubber that just smells bad or b) a fragrance that is trying to be another better fragrance but failing miserably 5-6.5: Average "meh" fragrance. Not creative, doesn't stand out, but smells decent. Most department store fragrances that aren't outright copies of something better end up here. 7-8.5: Good fragrance that I like, but is missing something. Either is too synthetic, not creative, too strong, etc. 9-9.5: Amazing fragrance I want to add to the collection. If it's not super creative, it has to smell incredible 10: One of the best fragrances ever made. Perfect. Creative, unique, plus smells amazing.

... Thanks everyone. Probably gonna try "II-IV Kintsugi | Masque" and "Music for a While | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle", though they don't seem like exactly what I'm looking for, they sound like fascinating scents. "Magnolia Grandiflora Sandrine | Grandiflora" is throwing me off b/c of its marketing to women, comparisons to cannabis, plus the low rating but the note pyramid looks exactly like what I was picturing for a fresh magnolia scent, I'll definitely be giving that one a try too. For the lavender one I'm not looking for anything soapy, more like "Memoir Man | Amouage" without the wormwood/basil top and oakmoss in the base if something like that exists.

Recommendations for scents found in nature

Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... I noticed a couple of scents in nature that I'm wondering if people have any recommendations of perfumes that recreate them: 1. The lavender plants near my house have an almost smoky incense-like quality. I'm wondering if there's an aromatic, sharp incense-lavender (or any kind of smoky lavender) frag. I know about "Encens et lavande | Serge Lutens" and want to try it but Serge Lutens usually smells really old-fashioned to me, just wondering if there are any other suggestions. 2. There's a street near me that's lined with magnolia trees and they have the most incredible smell when walking under them. Almost like a complete perfume rather than just a single note. I looked it up and apparently magnolias have naturally-occurring coumarin, the same ingredient found in tonka beans, that gives fougeres their signature dry-spicy sweetness. I'm wondering if there are any magnolia-centered male or unisex fragrances that smell like the real thing. The only one I know of is "Legend (Eau de Parfum) | Montblanc" and while a nice fragrance, it is pretty synthetic-smelling. Thanks in advance!

... If you like the chocolate in Boccanera, you might like "Oud Monarch (Extrait de Parfum) | Bortnikoff" or "Oud Indochine | Maksim Perfume", not particularly smoky but have that semisweet dusty cocoa note. "Opus XIII - Silver Oud | Amouage", "Sultanate of Oman | Roja Parfums", and "Le Gemme - Onekh | Bvlgari" are all great smoky oud choices.
