... Not sure if you're willing to try a masculine-leaning scent but "Althaïr | Parfums de Marly" is exactly this, clean fresh-linen-y musk + warm vanilla

... Stardust23 Ninamariah I'm a woman but I want to answer. I love Amouage, I'm totally crazy about them and I love and have many from men's collection (and I'm sure that you know already that there are many perfumes in women's collection that are absolutely unisex). Anyway I'm not going to tell you my favourites on me but ON MY HUSBAND'S SKIN and he's started secretly visiting my bottles because he smells irresistible when wearing them. These ones are so amazingly sexy on men: "Overture Man | Amouage" "Gold Man | Amouage" "Opus XV - King Blue | Amouage" "Jubilation 40 | Amouage" "Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco | Amouage" "Interlude Black Iris | Amouage" "Myths Man | Amouage" and all of you who are in hot climates I highly recommend to try "Honour Woman (Eau de Parfum) | Amouage" or "Honour 43 | Amouage" because that leathery base in them bushes through on mens' skin and it's amazingly attractive. If I have to say one that I definitely don't like on him is "Reflection Man | Amouage" and "Reflection 45 | Amouage" . @Ninamariah , what are you liking about "Overture Man | Amouage" ? Im still new in relative terms to this journey and I wear this occasionally. With each wear Im discovering something that I can’t quite describe that’s appealing so although I would rate the scent very low at this moment , I have this feeling that I will one day very much enjoy it. "Overture Man | Amouage" is my favorite fragrance of all time. It's just got everything. Booziness, spiciness, smokiness, resinous sweetness, woodiness, even grapefruit-ginger freshness in the opening. Complex yet all the parts work together seamlessly. Nothing overwhelms, and the resultant scent is just heavenly. Utterly unique, hasn't even been cloned successfully. But that's what I like about it. Specificity is polarizing. What might work on me, or smell good to me, might not to you. Lots of people complain about an overwhelming cumin/body odor smell, or a strong animalic component in the drydown. I get neither.

... 2019Mercedes I am surprised that only one person selected Reflection Man. "Reflection Man | Amouage" is the favorite of people who aren't huge fans of Amouage as a house. It's kinda like "Creep" by Radiohead, if that analogy makes sense.

Most Masculine Citrus Fragrance?

Perfume Recommendations
... "Blanc Galaxie (Eau de Parfum) | Balmain" has one of the best citrus openings of all time. Their other frags are hit or miss, but definitely get your nose on that one if you love citrus. I'd also suggest "Eau de Memo | Memo Paris", you might like the harsh leather + citrus combination since you liked "Search | Amouage", and "Zelen | Boka", which is a bitter bergamot/vetiver combo chock full of naturals.

... I'm slowly turning my wife into a fraghead. Her signature scent used to be "J'adore (Eau de Parfum) | Dior" when I met her, I got her into "Delina (Eau de Parfum) | Parfums de Marly" and "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" when I first started getting into niche. Now she mostly wears "À la Rose (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian", "Good Girl Gone Bad (Perfume) | Kilian", "Honour Woman (Eau de Parfum) | Amouage", and "Narcotic V. / Narcotic Venus (Extrait de Parfum) | Nasomatto". Dad's been wearing "Eternity for Men (Eau de Toilette) | Calvin Klein" since the 90s, not sure what my mom wears, it's probably a light body mist instead of an actual perfume, since I rarely actually smell it. FIL wears "Paco Rabanne pour Homme (Eau de Toilette) | Rabanne", has been since the 80s, but his nephews get him interesting Arabic stuff sometimes, I saw "Eternal Oud | Lattafa Pride" in his bedroom last time I was there, though I haven't yet smelled it on him. MIL wears "Crystal Noir (Eau de Parfum) | Versace". BIL has good taste, if a bit basic: "Layton | Parfums de Marly", "Aventus | Creed", "Sauvage Elixir | Dior". My aunt is a bit of a fraghead too but she only gets one signature scent at a time and finishes the whole bottle. She's on "Dioriviera | Dior" at the moment, she really liked "Jubilation 25 Woman (Eau de Parfum) | Amouage" when she tried it, might be getting that for her as a Christmas gift.

Why put gender on it?
Omnipotato
|
Perfume Discussions
... Lempi Omnipotato It's always the women on these threads who want to get rid of the idea of gender in perfumery and the guys who defend it, and it's easy to see why: when women wear men's clothing, they are seen as just a bit tomboyish; if a man wears women's clothing, he is a full-fledged transvestite in a lot of men's (and women's) minds. It's the same thing with perfume. If a man wears perfume that is traditionally, culturally, etc. seen as women's perfume, other men, and even some women, will assume he is sending some kind of message, that he is gay, effeminate, etc. When women wear men's fragrance, it's just cool with everyone and no one assumes they are trying to make a statement. Now I must admit that, while I understand that this part of the post was meant to be just a harmless generalization, it really got me quite upset. Why? I am the woman who has been constantly bullied more than half of her life being too "manly" and doing things that are completely "wrong" for my gender. Starting from my childhood how I played with "wrong" toys, continuing to my teenage when I wore "wrong" clothes and listened to "wrong" music and watched "wrong" movies/TV-series and further continuing in my adulthood constantly hearing verbal abuse from my ex and his friends that I'm wearing "wrong" fragrances, or that I'm not wearing makeup and being manly as all people in my gender should have makeup on, not shaving often enough as my hair growth is sooooo unfeminine etc. being not feminine enough in any way. I have actually even heard from perfume and clothes SAs how what I'm wearing is wrong and how I'm looking for things from the wrong side of the store. I have heard from my co-workers how me not wearing makeup or right gender clothes is unprofessional and how in parties I'm offensive to everybody because all women should really have makeup on in all parties. No one ever said I was cool or just a little bit tomboyish. The only thing I have heard is I'm not welcome to be who I am because it seems completely wrong to my gender. I have just chosen not to care but that doesn't mean that those words never hurt me. Yes they did, sometimes I still hear them in my head almost every day. Still, I chose to fight. I chose to stand for everybody who want to be themselves and show that the bullies won't pull me down, I will just continue to choose my own thing and show a living example to everybody else too that anyone can do this despite the horrible bullying. And now I'm hearing none of this ever actually could have happened to me because it's always only men who experience bullying of being "feminine" and I'm just fighting because I'm a woman and it's easy for me? Oh lord indeed. SMH. I definitely didn't intend to make anyone feel not heard or not seen, and you're right; my generalization was stupid when it came to the woman's perspective, since I have very little experience with that (mostly through my wife, who teaches me every day), which is not an excuse. My point was mainly that a significant part of straight men's decision-making is based on machismo and homophobia, since it has been drilled into our heads that we cannot expose our effeminate side in public, and that it is seen as a sign of weakness. Speaking strictly about fragrance, I haven't directly been called out for wearing something effeminate (mainly because I'm admittedly not adventurous in that way), but I've been shooed away from the "women's" scent section on more than one occasion (ain't my fault that Sephora keeps all the Kilians and Tom Fords on that side!), and I've had a friend come up to me, who knows I'm a fraghead, and ask about another guy, "isn't he wearing women's perfume?" in a derogatory way, who I then had to educate that fragrance doesn't really have gender, and that most fragrances are unisex now anyway. If he's comfortable voicing that opinion, who knows what's going on in other guys' heads when they come across something they deem effeminate, or what is being talked about behind my own back? Definitely not trying to directly compare experiences, but just saying there's a reason men avoid certain scents.

... Ursaw The fact that my partner is afraid to wear "L'Eau d'Issey (Eau de Toilette) | Issey Miyake" outside of the house even though it is really beautiful on him @Ceesie And that doesn’t only apply to perfume but also to clothing, is that women can more easily pull of a male-marketed product than vice versa. It's always the women on these threads who want to get rid of the idea of gender in perfumery and the guys who defend it, and it's easy to see why: when women wear men's clothing, they are seen as just a bit tomboyish; if a man wears women's clothing, he is a full-fledged transvestite in a lot of men's (and women's) minds. Now we can analyze why this is until the cows come home, whether it is the result of marketing 100 years ago, or political, or just cultural, but it doesn't make much difference. Most men are uncomfortable wearing sweet, fruity, or floral scents, especially if those scents are built on a traditional women's perfume DNA. This is not necessarily a conscious decision they're making but built upon years upon years of conditioning, with their grandmas, moms, wives, daughters, female friends, wearing perfumes with a certain combination of notes and men not wanting to smell like that not only because they will be judged by others, but because it is uncomfortable for us to smell that way. It just doesn't feel natural. An analogy would be like major and minor keys in music. There's nothing intrinsically sad about slow tempos or the minor key or intrinsically happy about the major key but it would feel unnatural to play Barber's Adagio for Strings at a happy occasion like a wedding, or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik at a funeral (unless that was the deceased's favorite piece or something). I like floral notes done in a light playful way. I just don't like them on myself. I'm wearing "Eau de Magnolia | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle" today, and I have no qualms about the scent. It's just not me. I'd love to smell it on a woman. It would just feel more natural. "Natural" in the sense that there is some natural law or science or morality that requires women to smell like flowers? Not at all, but what has happened is that my whole life I've been conditioned by society to feel this way. I can't just "decide" that I'm going to enjoy smelling like that from now on, no matter how much it's drilled into me that all fragrance is unisex. Even if I force myself and rotate between wearing "J'adore (Eau de Parfum) | Dior", "Delina (Eau de Parfum) | Parfums de Marly", and "Coco Mademoiselle (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel" every day for a year, it's still going to feel wrong to me, like it's not my own smell emanating from my own body.

... The best place to start for tried and true would probably be the top rated perfumes on this site . At least from a male perspective, I've found the top 25 or so unisex+male fragrances at least worth a try, even if they didn't end up being my absolute favorites. If you're looking for smoky, spicy apple, "Carlisle | Parfums de Marly" could be up your alley

What kind of reviews are helpful?
Omnipotato
|
Perfume Discussions
... I think one of the most important things you can do in a given review is point out which notes stood out the most. Note pyramids have dozens of notes, most of which you can't smell. Either because there's just too much going on and your nose focuses on one or two stronger scents, or maybe just because the marketing team went overboard and just listed a bunch of notes that are barely detectable because it makes it seem like a more "complex" fragrance (looking at you, Spirit of Dubai). If a fragrance has 5 notes: rose, vetiver, incense, patchouli, and amber, you cannot really tell what kind of perfume it will be just based on the notes listing. Is it mostly a floral rose-patchouli chypre with the other notes in the background? Or is it a resinous incense-amber with slight floral hints? Does it mainly focus on the earthy notes or is it mainly sweet because of the amber? Is the incense powerful or does it play a bit part? Another thing is that notes themselves can be hugely different from fragrance to fragrance: is the rose jammy/sweet or green and light? Is the "amber" more like ambergris/ambroxan, or a "true" amber of vanilla, benzoin, and labdanum? Does the incense note smell like pure frankincense resin, or is it mixed in with charcoal and smoky notes to give the impression of incense being burned in a censer? The answers to these questions play a huge role as to whether or not someone will enjoy a fragrance, and none of them are answered by a note listing.

... My sort of self-imposed limit is $500, but that's only because I've never tried anything over that price that is worth it to me. But I've spent over $400 quite a few times ("Vanille Havane Coeur de Oud | Les Indémodables", "Outlands | Amouage", "Oud (Extrait de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian", "Oud Indochine | Maksim Perfume")

... I feel like this would be too easy if including niche brands and private line designers so I'll keep it to mainline designer scents that you can find in most department stores (or online for quite cheap). I'll also stay away from "traditional" men's scents like straightforward fougeres or citrus-musks, even though they don't necessarily smell like Axe: "Dior Homme Intense (2011) | Dior" "Sauvage Elixir | Dior" "Fahrenheit Parfum | Dior" "Bois Pacifique | Tom Ford" (the mainline version of "Ébène Fumé (Eau de Parfum) | Tom Ford" essentially) "L'Homme Idéal (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" (and "L'Homme Idéal Parfum | Guerlain" too) "Pasha de Cartier Noir Absolu | Cartier" "Déclaration Parfum | Cartier" "Guilty Absolute pour Homme | Gucci" "Guilty Elixir de Parfum pour Homme | Gucci" "Devotion pour Homme (Eau de Parfum) | Dolce & Gabbana" ("Devotion pour Homme (Parfum) | Dolce & Gabbana" is absolute trash though, smells like every other men's release from the past decade) "Boss Bottled Absolu | Hugo Boss" Probably many, many more I've tried that I just can't think of.

... Escentric Molecules, especially "Molecule 01 | Escentric Molecules". Literally anyone can just get ISO-E Super and perfumer's alcohol and create it yourself for like 1/10 the cost. Totally agree with you about Le Labo. Super overrated brand. Byredo has a couple of good ones like "Bal d'Afrique (Absolu de Parfum) | Byredo" and "De Los Santos | Byredo" but also probably overhyped and overpriced. Lots of brands I just don't get the hype for and none of their offerings have ever done anything for me including: Boadicea the Victorious Narcotica Dusita Spirit of Dubai Fueguia 1833 Bond No. 9 Fragrance du Bois To a lesser extent (they have one or two good ones but I still don't agree with the way the brand is hyped in general): Creed Louis Vuitton Le Labo Serge Lutens Chanel Guerlain I realize the historical significance of the last two, but I really just can't get into them.

... Ceesie Hoorah! You have tried and tested both already right? No regrets leaving the D&G for later perhaps? Have you witnessed the Gucci bottles already or have you used a decant? Yeah I've tested both; they have them in person at the Nordstrom near me. My only disappointment is they seem to have changed the bottle design for the Gucci to be more plain text instead of the cursive. The black bottle and design are still gorgeous though. Some of D&G's Velvet series are on discounters for like 50% off so I'm hoping I can find it in the next year or so for a lot cheaper, even though it's not available now for less than retail.

... atllogix Congrats, "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" simple notes that I think are going to bring a complex (comparatively) journey Thanks! "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" purely for the bottle. I witnessed it last weekend and it’s drop dead gorgeous. Add to that it’s an amazing scent. Way better than the mainstream one. Edit: this inspired me to sell my bottle of "Guilty Absolute pour Homme | Gucci" and get this one instead. Oh wow! Glad you liked it so much to replace Guilty Absolute @Ceesie "Y Le Parfum (2025) | Yves Saint Laurent" of course! Go spend that raise and see if you like it more the second time around! Noooooooo But if you are having second doubts, I'd go with "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" I personally like that better of the two. Also more complex than the listed notes would indicate. Glad to get a perspective from someone who's tried both @Aquarius1 Looks like "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" is too far ahead for "Velvet Zafferano | Dolce & Gabbana" to catch up. Gonna pick the Gucci up today!

... Got a nice pay raise and Nordstrom happens to be having a sale for the next couple of days on fragrances. Time for a new purchase! The two I'm deciding between are both private line fragrances that aren't readily available on discounters, and both kind of better-quality versions of cheaper designer fragrances: "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" is a better "Guilty Absolute pour Homme | Gucci" and "Velvet Zafferano | Dolce & Gabbana" is a better "L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme Noir Ambré | Issey Miyake". They're also about the same price, and both fall/winter bangers. Which should I get?
