Unisex vs Feminine vs Masculine

... as a non-binary person, I do stick to stuff marketed to women for the most part, just because all my experiences with "for men" fragrances so far have been negative. perhaps there's some out there that don't have that same weird base smell that I cannot stand, but I've not been in the mood to try more in ages. I've got one on my interested list... I should see if I can get a decant. I suppose there are some associations I make, but it's become less and less as I smell more and more. like, for example, there's really nothing particularly femme about "Moves for Her | Adidas" or "Cool Water Street Fighter Champion Edition for Her | Davidoff". anyone could wear these. no one's gonna know they're marketed to women. they could be marketed as unisex and it wouldn't matter. and if "Soft (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab" and "Choco Musk (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab" are considered unisex perfumes... I feel it just proves the gendering in the fragrance realm is silly. if I use the terms, I am solely using them because of marketing. I do it for other people, not for myself. the lines blur too much for it to ever feel truly definitive. I prefer to specify that it's labeled or marketed for/to men/women than really say masc/femme. or if I do, I will be explicit about the association. I'm getting wordy LOL but I think I've covered it all. maybe. Probably. as a nb person, I highly appreciate people that will wear whatever. I wish it could be me too. editing to say that I don't ever look at the charts on here. my ADHD brain must have kinda glossed over that part of the OP lol

Do you ever blind buy? Or do you always test first?

... I am still a blind buyer from time to time, but I've got my limits for spending on blind buys. I test as much as possible otherwise. even when it comes to blind buys, I think on them for a while. I did a couple of impulse buys recently, along with one I'd been thinking on and off about for a while. they're all great, so I won there, but I can't see myself doing that again for a while. I do prefer testing.

What's the fragrance that got you into this hobby?
MOONTRIPS

Perfumes & Brands
... hmm, I don't really feel like there was one that specifically got me really into fragrance...? I don't know. I've always been a multi-fragrance person, etc. Bath & Body Works was part of my life from like, 7 years old, so... yeah. honestly it's been long enough since I got into fragrance and as someone with ADHD, my memories are a bit of a blur in this regard. really, just being part of a perfume community was what really got me interested in smelling more things. I don't miss Fragrantica after learning I wasn't truly welcome there, but being on there was what really changed things for me. was an easy way to just be aware of SO many fragrances. so many things I'd never known. and then I became a cheapie blind buyer LOL that said, things like "Sunflowers (Eau de Toilette) | Elizabeth Arden" and all the Al-Rehab scents I tried definitely were defining things for me

... "Full (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab", "Rasha (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab", "Susan (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab" just some blind buys... all winners for me so I'm happy. I figured they would be.

Gourmand neroli?

... @Gourmandgrl I get the bergamot and orange blossom the most! it is quite sweet, but an easy wear thanks to the bergamot. the name fits, it's got a strangely refreshing and almost soda-like smell. Almost. something about it really reminds me of "Pink Sugar (Eau de Toilette) | Pink Sugar" or "Soft (Eau de Parfum) | Al Rehab". I'm not the best at explaining. if you've ever got a way to smell it, it's worth a smell!

... I adore all of the "Angel (Eau de Parfum) | Mugler" and flanker bottles. love that shape, love the colors they can be. I have "Angel Nova (Eau de Parfum) | Mugler"... yeah, I'd say it matches up pretty well. oh yeah I'm obsessed with Anna Sui bottles. I LOVE the "Dolly Girl | Anna Sui" bottles so much... idk what it is but I wish I could have one. I had Cosmic Sky... I nearly kept it just for the bottle, but while my test of it was favorable, both of the times I tried wearing it, it went horribly bitter on me. pear just does that. most of the time, anyway. I decided to give it to my aunt instead of keeping it just for the bottle. I don't have the space to do that, haha. I really like the Juicy Couture Rock The Rainbow line bottles, I have "Rock The Rainbow - Oh So Orange (Eau de Toilette) | Juicy Couture". I dunno, something about the shape, the colors and the crown lid... I just like 'em. uhhhhhhh... there's definitely more... I'm a sucker for different shaped bottles. tho I do also really like the basic bottles used for Al Rehab perfumes... I think they're cute. same with the 1.7 ounce Yara bottle... it's also used for other 1.7 ounce perfumes. nothing special but it's still nice imo

Which notes do you avoid?

... fig just goes so dusty on me. I actually liked it in "Pink - Sweet Fig | Victoria's Secret" initially, but over time. came to be unable to stand it. have tested a couple of other fig things, and it's the same effect. just can't do it. coconut actively makes me nauseous. I really cannot do coconut. but coconut milk is somehow tolerable in fragrance sometimes? funny how that works for me. a lot of coconut in fragrances also just smells so dreadfully fake and I think that's another element that makes it off-putting. not that it being realistic would make it better for me, but y'know. pineapple smells so bad to me. I don't like the smell of real pineapple either. actively repels me. lavender is another big dislike of mine. "R.E.M. | Ariana Grande" was kinda tolerable, and I thought I wanted it for a time... sometimes I still think on it. but lavender is just another thing I generally dislike. I think I liked it for a time in early adulthood, but it was really short-lived. and now I despise it lol licorice and anise... at least generally, I can't stand. I have found an exception in "Purple Elixir (Eau de Toilette) | Alyssa Ashley", where it's not too strong, but when I see licorice or anise listed as a note, it more often than not makes me kind of scared. "Pink Sugar (Eau de Toilette) | Pink Sugar", I got it so horribly strongly, and it ended up smelling like burnt plastic to me. no good. so yeah, that memory doesn't help... vanilla prominent or on its own is not my thing. it is, of course, present in some fragrances I enjoy, but it's never the star of the show. it just doesn't work for me. I wish it did, I admit that I am often kind of intrigued when I see the vanilla enthusiasts talk about good vanilla fragrances, but it's just not for me. patchouli is another that I cannot do. it's a lot. I actually get bad flashbacks to a patchouli-smelling soap I tried... that was just way too strong. I had to get rid of it, because the scent stuck to my hands and it was so overwhelming. was sad, 'cause it did smell nice when I smelled it from the bottle. sometimes it's in fragrances, but I don't smell it, or it's only barely there. but if I can actually really smell it, it's a big no. so if it is prominent in a fragrance, I definitely avoid. cherry... there is an exception in my "Kimoji Cherry | KKW Fragrance / Kim Kardashian" dupe(Kimberly Sweet Cherry), but most of the time, regardless of what others say about cherry in a fragrance, it comes across as terribly medicinal to me.

... I don't have the original but LDBS or a dupe of it is an easy recommend. my dupe smells SO sweet. what I'd consider a spinoff of that sort of scent is "Fizzy (2006) (Eau de Toilette) | Alyssa Ashley" but that's hard to get a hold of, so not a direct recommendation, but would also fit the bill.

... I don't really think of my fragrances as a collection, even if they technically are. it's not like my plush collection or my amiibo collection. at any rate, no. I think there'll always be things coming and going... but I'm slowing down on buying because I only have so much space for these things. there's always more I'll want to smell, but that doesn't mean they all have to enter my living space in some capacity.

... my tray for May has: "Fizzy (2006) (Eau de Toilette) | Alyssa Ashley" "Yara / يارا (Eau de Parfum) | Lattafa / لطافة" "Strawberry | Lip Smacker" "Fairy Dust | Paris Hilton" "Sunflowers (Eau de Toilette) | Elizabeth Arden" "Green Tea Lotus | Elizabeth Arden" "Snooki (Eau de Parfum) | Nicole Polizzi" (body mist, not parfum) "Cheirosa '62 / Brazilian Crush Cheirosa '62 | Sol de Janeiro" "Petal Plush Clouds | Victoria's Secret" "Pink - Pop Jelly! Frsh & Cln | Victoria's Secret" starts getting warm here in May, so this tray is very spring and a little summery. I never posted for April but there's a number of things carried over from last month to this month hehe

Years invested in perfumery

Parfumo Community
... I wish I remembered! it's been... at least 4 years. I've always liked fragrances and had them around, tho I didn't get too into it until a few years ago. I'm still pretty casual, I'm not out to smell everything and not into being challenged or whatever. since I've always liked fragrances, I feel a level of investment was always inevitable, I'm just surprised it took me so long.

... I had a period where I was obsessed with "Sunflowers (Eau de Toilette) | Elizabeth Arden" but now it's been quite a while since I wanted to wear it. I wasn't wearing it super regularly or anything, but I've like, not even wanted it on my tray for so long. I'm holding onto my bottle anyway, just because in my heart I still really like it. hopefully one day...

Favorite citrus scents?
MOONTRIPS
|
Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... while it's not primarily citrus, the orange note in "Brilliant White Diamonds | Elizabeth Taylor" is very strong and prominent to me. fulfills the uplifting part for me, personally. "Green Tea Lotus | Elizabeth Arden" has a really nice yuzu note and even though I let it go, "Sunflowers Sunlight Kiss | Elizabeth Arden" was a nice lighter citrusy take on Sunflowers. I mostly let it go because I have and love the original and this is still pretty similar to it, but the citrus is really nice.

... yes, I occasionally blind buy. I used to do it more, but now I do it much, much less. I'm really particular and would much rather sample, though in many cases it's not possible. still, I'm happier to skip a reckless blind buy now than I may have been a year or two ago.

... I don't think calling things juvenile is any better... as someone in their 30s with a relatively wide range of what they like, the ageism that often comes with describing older perfumes is upsetting and rude. wild that people are doing that with 90s fragrances! I love exploring vintage perfume. for a while, I was a participant on the femfraglab subreddit from time to time. but when people called out the rampant ageism and mods got weird about it and chose to do nothing and defend their right to do nothing, I stopped participating there. there was a 30+ version of it made and I was on that one, but activity was so little that I got kinda bored. I suppose I'm generally reluctant to participate in fragrance discussion publically because of the snobbery tho. femfraglab was pretty ok for the lack of snobbery, but the ageism was a problem.
