... "Au Delà - Narcisse / Narcisse des Montagnes | Fzotic / Bruno Fazzolari" This works so well in all kinds of weather but I am really enjoying it on a hot night. The citrusy green-ness is refreshing and the narcissus is truly narcotic in the warm evening air. I originally purchased this as a late winter/early spring fragrance because I have such strong associations with narcissus at that time of year. This time of year it takes on a more general white floral character with the help of the jasmine and neroli. The chypre structure is timeless and I feel so elegant when I where one.

... Some days only patchouli will do! "Patchouli Nobile (Eau de Parfum) | Nobile 1942" is so bright and lively and entirely unapologetic about showcasing the dank, earthy aspects of patchouli. I’ve added a little "Psychédélique | Jovoy" at the wrist. It’s more ambery and complex, a little more workday (Friday). But all together, these patchoulis have me feeling like the weekend is starting early! Sidney Herbert Sime, “Illustrative Design of Fountain and Figures” (nd), oil on canvas.

... "Relique d'Amour (2012) | Oriza L. Legrand" Becoming a bit obsessed with yellow florals and the lily here starts to scratch that itch—though I don’t consider it typically yellow. Still, it is reliably beautiful and an office friendly floral thanks to the gravitas of pine, stone, and woods. I have samples of "Vouloir être ailleurs. C.G. | d'Orsay", "Déjà le Printemps / Breath of Spring | Oriza L. Legrand", and "Rain Cloud | Perfumer H" that I am exploring. I think I am drawn to a combination of yellow floral and greenish fresh hay/grass and humidity. I can’t say any of these is precisely “the one” but each is excellent in their own right. "Vouloir être ailleurs. C.G. | d'Orsay" has the buttery, golden yellow quality through a delicate balance of linden, acacia, and hay. It’s excellent. Leaning a little too pretty if I am honest, but undeniably good. Sampling this at the wrist to see where it takes me. "Déjà le Printemps / Breath of Spring | Oriza L. Legrand" is drier and more complex with mint and chamomile. It shares some loamy-earth qualities with "Chypre Mousse (2013) | Oriza L. Legrand.” Captivating but I’m not sold on the base notes. "Rain Cloud | Perfumer H" is wonderfully humid and thick with florals. But a tad too sweet. Will need to revisit.

... "Bois d'Ascèse | Naomi Goodsir" New week, new moon, and appearing to be a fire-y one. May as well clue everyone in with where I am coming from. Which apparently is a distant wood fire that simultaneously worries and comforts you. ❤️🔥

... "Anubis | Papillon Artisan Perfumes" Such a powerful, striking scent. Not ideal for office wear so I like to celebrate it on the weekends. My first and still favorite leather. It’s wrapped in rose laden florals and a gorgeous olibanum incense.

Do you ever blind buy? Or do you always test first?

Perfume Discussions
... Not blind buying is one guideline I adhere to faithfully. I am fortunate to have access to several retailers (brick and mortar as well as retail) so obtaining samples is easy with a little patience. With enough experience I’ve learned that pyramids, reviews, and marketing copy are not enough to tell me how much I will enjoy a fragrance. I can’t even count the number of samples I was excited for, so certain they would be worthy of a full bottle in my collection—only to sniff the sample vial and feel so relieved to be out a few dollars instead of a few hundred. Dopamine is a powerful force and I am all too aware the part it plays in my enjoyment of fragrance. No sense in fueling it with high stakes gambling or suffering through the mental gymnastics trying to convince myself to love something I don’t. One of the great pleasures of fragrance for me is the unfolding experience over time—whether that’s the duration of one wear, or across a particular season of my life, or the longevity of a bottle over many years. There is much pleasure and discovery in the practice of patience. So, in general, I aim to sample first (1-2mL) and then if I really enjoy it, I try to find a decant (5mL). Many fragrant relationships don’t make it past this stage. Either I don’t enjoy them enough to warrant a full bottle or they are redundant to a bottle I have. Every once in a while, something passes through this gauntlet and I purchase a full bottle with confidence that it will adored and cherished.

Which notes do you avoid?

... Tealight10 MorganleFay Tealight10 I’m sorry to say that I generally dislike iris as a prominent note. I am still exploring fragrances that include it in an effort to simply learn more but so far I’ve consistently found that I don’t enjoy it. If a fragrance includes it in a well-blended, supportive fashion (which is many) then I don’t mind so much. I recently sampled "Iris Cendré | Naomi Goodsir" and learned that a fragrance can actually make me feel deeply sad. Quite strange. Probably some unconscious associations going on. Alas. Wait! You're the first person besides myself I've heard express that a fragrance makes you sad. I had that response to "Coromandel (Eau de Toilette) | Chanel" - it's such a melancholic, wet patchouli - and it is married to orris. Coincidence? I just received a sample of "Coromandel (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel" and I will see how it lands. I was reminded of this discussion today because I found time to explore some Guerlain samples and had the same experience with iris again. "Shalimar (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" and "L'Heure Bleue (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" (which is famously melancholy)—both just left me treading water in a tide of sadness. So strange. Found this post and felt the need to revisit and say that I have completely flipped in my opinion on iris. I must report that I am obsessed. Please consider this a public service announcement: “Never say never to a note.”

... Meeting a friend after work and realized I could use a fragrant afterwork pick me up. And this is why I carry a small vial of "Shalimar (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" in my bag! Rapidly leaving the week behind and feeling sublime on this beautiful timeless cloud. I’m really picking up the citrus and vanilla in the opening which are fun and festive and then just feeling wildly sensuous with all the funky-prowly animalic accords underneath.

... "Ummagumma | Fzotic / Bruno Fazzolari" I’m not sure what you mean by dark but this one smells precisely of Italian panetonne to me. Spicy, sweet, dense, bread. Many patchoulis are shaped to be darkly chocolatey that feels gourmand to me. "Patchouli Noir / Patchouly Noir | Il Profvmo" had a lovely dark minty-chocolate feel.

... "Petrichor / The Garden Collection - Petrichor | Marissa Zappas" My new love. It’s a beautiful and low key, iris-vetiver fragrance that evokes cold, wet soil on a foggy day. Nostalgic, quiet, subtle. More suggestive than realistic but wonderfully effective.

... Maybe "The Architects Club | Arquiste" ? I didn’t find it particularly sweet. I recall it has a kind of gin cocktail dryness. It’s often compared to "Eau Duelle (Eau de Toilette) | Diptyque" . While I see the similarities, I preferred Eau Duelle. Arquiste has a very contemporary style (which to my nose means a crunchy ambroxan/synthetic accord) and I am not drawn to that, though I get why others love it.

... I’ve tried several times with Essential Parfums. I like the concept, the price point, and the noses they hire. I’ve sniffed "Orange x Santal | Essential Parfums" , "Patchouli Mania | Essential Parfums" , and "Rose Magnetic | Essential Parfums", and was not excited. I see why people like "Bois Impérial (Eau de Parfum) | Essential Parfums" but other fragrances hit these notes far better. I sampled "Velvet Iris | Essential Parfums" recently and had high hopes based on descriptions. I found it so overwhelmingly sweet and synthetic, I scrubbed and tossed—which is rare to do both. That ended any and all interest I have in the house unfortunately. I had a similar experience with Matiere Premier sadly. "Radical Rose (Eau de Parfum) | Matière Première" was an early love then I sampled "Crystal Saffron (Eau de Parfum) | Matière Première" and it’s just obnoxiously strong for me. It unnecessarily overwhelms every other sample in the drawer and I’ve lost all curiosity about the brand.

... "Feu Secret | Fzotic / Bruno Fazzolari" is the iris fragrance that made me iris obsessed. Iris had such a special place in my heart now. Fazzolari has a very broad palette of compositions but I find his floral centered fragrances unique, complex, and completely captivating. Feu Secret is bewitching at every stage from the very cool carrot-y iris opening with hints of eucalyptus and tumeric to the warm, woody, vanilla dry down. The texture is soft and suede like, addictively chewy. When I wear it, all other scents are dead to me and I happily contemplate the fate of a signature scent. Iris is so beautiful and gentle and restful. Almost simultaneously with Feu Secret, I fell hard for "Iris Cendré | Naomi Goodsir" which has been mentioned above for excellent reasons. Like Feu Secret, Iris Cendré is also a study in “cold” iris but it has some pretty violet to contrast the iris’s cool melancholy. The violet is perfect here. Sweet but not candied. The texture is very different from Feu Secret but similar to Iris Cendré’s sibling "Nuit de Bakélite | Naomi Goodsir"—brittle, vintage, synthetic resin. I have sniffed a dozen other irises chasing the cool sweetness of Iris Cendré and nothing quite matches it. "Iris silver mist | Serge Lutens" comes close but try as I might, Serge Lutens never quite clicks for me. The clove there is a constant distraction. I come back to Iris Cendré contrite and apologizing for looking for the thing I already have.
