What defines a chypre?

... The wiki definition of chypre is a perfume based on Coty’s Chypre accord of bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss. Nowadays it doesn’t have to have all these ingredients. Mitsouko was the second commercial Chypre - the perfumer added an aldehyde that smells like peaches and gave the world our soft-sharp, slightly fruity, dark and light masterpiece. My opinion is, if a fragrance has prominent oakmoss or honestly anything dark green, it’s a chypre. I’m sure someone will prove me wrong. But I think a chypre has a certain feeling, of being a little austere or melancholy like @Ringtale said. My favorite chypre is "Femme (1989) (Eau de Toilette) | Rochas" (1989 version in particular) because it takes the peachy swing in Mitsouko and adds plum, woods, and something that smells like cinnamon even though it’s not listed. It’s lightly sweet, a bit sweaty, and really has a sense of majesty. Close runner up is "Bandit (2012) (Eau de Parfum) | Robert Piguet". Incredibly rough leather and galbanum and it’s honestly kind of intimidating but also addictive. "The Afternoon of a Faun | Etat Libre d'Orange" is also really great and newer than the others. Smells rosy and mossy.

... kushbreth perfumers who use ai photos should not be allowed to sell or make perfumes 😋 if youre too lazy to just take a picture with some dollar store props, your perfume probably smells like ass too Big agree. If that makes me a Luddite so be it. AI art looks like slop most times, and actually turns me off as a consumer. If a company can’t afford an artist they can use public domain pictures of art, or simply take pictures of their own merchandise. Many small indies like BPAL do this and turn out successful. My ethical/environmental/labor/int ellectual property concerns with AI are combined with my general dislike for the results it produces. I would prefer technological advancements to be used with the benefit of the many in mind, but instead it’s being used to replace small independent artists and justify the laying off of tech workers.

... Awildgoat I haven't smelled Vent Vert but maybe you'd like "L'Eau d'Issey (Eau de Toilette) | Issey Miyake" or "A Drop d'Issey (Eau de Parfum Essentielle) | Issey Miyake"? I think I might like L'Eau, it sounds quite fresh and intriguing, especially with the Lily of the Valley. Thank you.

Ringtale I think you maybe will miss a little sweetness and moist in "N°19 (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel" It is a beautyful scent, don't get me wrong and I like it myself, but maybe a bit more 'dry' than what you are looking for. Thank you very much! I am definitely looking for a flowery, fresh, Lily of the Valley galbanum green floral scent, and dry is something I'm trying to avoid. I'm totally willing to accept that there's nothing out there quite like Vent Vert.

... Hello friends - I am recently obsessed with "Vent Vert (1947) (Eau de Toilette) | Balmain", but the vintage bottle is quite expensive. I have tried other perfumes, but Vent Vert is still singular with its combination of galbanum, citrus, and light, sweet, green florals. Do you have any recommendations for things that smell alike? I am looking for something with: green, citrus, floral, hopefully with galbanum. At a decent price, I pray and hope. I've tried Miss Dior original. I am considering "Silences (1978) (Parfum de Toilette) | Jacomo", "N°19 (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel", "Futur (Eau de Parfum) | Robert Piguet". But, reading the notes list, none of these seems to match. Thank you in advance!

..."Vetiver (Eau de Toilette) | Guerlain" - if I spray a decent amount, it truly lasts all day on me in my quite sweaty working conditions. It's fresh, classic, citrusy and green. Not common these days. "Acqua di Giò pour Homme (Eau de Toilette) | Giorgio Armani" - It's easy to find at a pharmacy, so you can try it first! It's a very clean, long lasting aquatic scent.

... "Opium (1977) (Parfum) | Yves Saint Laurent" and "Féminité du bois | Serge Lutens". Notably, both have plum and a ton of spice. But Opium has so much going on that it’s like a citrus-topped, floral, spiced oriental and slightly fruity-woody thing. I could really wear it all the time in almost any mood- it’s like several different perfumes through its development. FdB is so moody but also surprisingly light and suitable even for the summer months because of it. It’s mostly linear but it’s not too sweet or overwhelming, making it great to wear even at the office.

This website was so helpful, based on Kafkaesque’s review I decided to go with a vintage EdT for the same price (I’ve been having good luck shopping I guess). The one I bought is the tall, rectangular frosted houndstooth bottle - aka the “EdT Luxe.” I’m looking forward to it!! Based on the reviews, and my love of Vent Vert, I think I’ll really like it.

Green but not fresh

... Something that makes me think of death/decay/fores t/green is the moss accord. I think you could look for a chypre type perfume that doesn’t have bergamot/lemon in large amounts. Like "Chypre Mousse (2013) | Oriza L. Legrand", people say it’s very foresty. Or a straight up juniper pine scent- like "Yatagan (Eau de Toilette) | Caron". It has bergamot but people don’t say it’s fresh.
