Scent has different smell on different parts of body sprayed

... I wasn't sure where to post this question, but it's driving me a little crazy. Question. Does a scent smell differently to you on different parts of your body? For example, I spray a certain scent 2x on neck, 1 on chest, and 1 on each wrist. If I stick my nose down my shirt, I love it and smells wonderful and get all sorts of notes. However, and I've noticed this for a few scents that just have just a touch of vanilla in the base, the wrists are overpowered by the vanilla. It's weird and slightly annoying. I'm not sure if it is my wrists specifically react differently to certain scents. I have only noticed it with some things with vanilla as an official note listed on the pyramid. Otherwise, with scents without it, I am not noticing it. Has anyone heard of this or is this common? Is there anything I can do differently other than not spray wrists?

... Hot take number 3 or whatever: The crazier the bottle, the less I am interested. The scents I have in my collection are mostly clear, blocky bottles with a sticker or decal on them. I think Rogue and Fzotic probably have the same bottle company. While I think bottles can be an interesting art piece to look at or conversation starter, generally, I don't give a shit about bottle design unless it's what I consider bad. It's like the "guy must be compensating for something if he drives a lifted 4X4 pickup truck" thing. Why is your scent in a robot? WHY! I'm collecting smells, not trophies.

What defines a chypre?

... "Chypre Palatin | Parfums MDCI" is kind of a weird one. While I love it, it's not the most "Chypre smelling Chypre" if that makes sense. For me I love more dry and mossy scents while Chypre Palatin does introduce vanilla in the base and in certain weather settings, it's pretty dominant at least to my nose. I actually wrote about this experience in a blog post on this site. LOL. A few others that I really enjoy. "Chypre Fulminare | Naughton & Wilson" On paper there isn't much for florals, but they are in there, I think primarily from ylang ylang listed in the notes. It's lightly "dirty and sour" (in a good way) on top. Peppery and leathery with an earthy and mossy dry down. "Chypre Noir | American Perfumer" (from Rogue Perfumery and Manuel Cross but only American Perfumer sells it). Pretty classic to me. Citrus - Floral - Moss with a resinous animalistic kick. "Dryad | Papillon Artisan Perfumes" Is a nicely done fragrance. About the driest scent I ever experienced if that makes sense at all. One thing I am learning is that Chypre seems to be a pretty loose categorization and I am trying to sample as many as I can. So hopefully you get lots of recommendations I can get ideas from as well.

... Hot take (maybe not): Perfume ads/commercials are some of the most cringe advertisements for any industry. I get so embarrassed when they are on tv when I am sitting next to my non-fragrance-hobbyist spouse.

... Ursaw The differentiation between "niche" and "designer" is completely pointless and should be abandoned. Person A can draw . Person B can draw AND play a musical instrument. Both enter an unspecified theoretical drawing competition . Their victory or defeat is in no way related to their additional skillsets or lack thereof. It depends on how good they are at drawing . I am aware that I am oversimplifying things, but my point stands. And it's the same with perfumes. It makes no difference what else whoever created them is good at. They are either good at what they do or they are not. Just to play devils advocate for the purposes of discussion.... Person A dedicates their life to the art of drawing and has made numerous masterpieces while Person B just happens to be good at drawing while having an ability to also play a musical instrument so they do both. They both could win the theoretical drawing contest, but if I am buying drawing art, I'm more likely to support Person A. Because I don't care about contests (mass appeal), I want art that isn't bound by creative limits to win contests.

... @Lempi I don't think designers are bad or can't be good. It's just my experience. There is a safeness to them I dislike and that even does lead into certain niche brands. I think like Creed or Parfums de Marly ride that safe line too. You are right, this isn't much of a hot take, though. Curious, what are some of the more unique designers I could maybe sample that could float my boat? I would love to try some! When I say designer, I mean stuff like Dior, Versace, and Ralph Lauren which nothing from them excites me, but I am not saying they are bad or poor. I generally do like Tom Ford which is more luxury designer (right?). When I think niche, I think Rogue Perfumery and Parfums de Nicolai and I think there is a big difference between these brands and Dior, Versace, and Ralph Lauren.

... Another one for me: I'm not shitting on designer scents, but they are not for me. They are almost always in a range of "meh" to good, but nothing blows me away. On the other side, I love niche scents and almost exclusively sample them now. They generally provide me with a much more interesting scent profile, even if I think they are bad, I can respect the creativity. They are just more "fun" to experience, good and bad.

... I don't know if this is a hot take but.... Too many people worry way too much about "longevity" and "sillage" versus how good the scent actually is. Like are you really going to trade a 9/10 scent because it only gets you 6 hours of longevity and sillage but grab a 6/10 scent because the stuff will last 9 hours on you? I know there are limits, but far too many posts on social media ask for recommendations strictly based on how long the scent lasts. I get there is a minimum acceptable length of time and sometimes there are exceptions, but almost everything will be somewhat acceptable.

... Have you ever received a sample and tried it but it was so “not you” or bad or whatever that you just lose all desire to explore within that fragrance house again? I have two. I really can’t see myself trying anything from Mancera after Red Tobacco (and I love tobacco notes) and Viktor & Rolf for the body odor scent of Spicebomb Extreme. It’s not far but I can’t help it. Maybe someday I will, but right now I just have zero desire. Red Tobacco is really good past the absolute horrible top notes, such a shame for me. Spicebomb Extreme without cumin would be something I love. I know both have their fans and am glad a lot of people like these scents, however.

What's your "hit rate" with samples (or blind buys)?
Killsocket
|
Perfume Discussions
... Four months in and my #1 rule is no blind buying. I want to, but I know better. So I order samples of everything before buying a bottle. The past month I have actually tried utilizing ChatGPT to at least get a starting point of what to explore. I lean very heavily into the Fougere/Chypre/Vetiver/vintage styled scents. I find it to be quite entertaining and really opens the doors to other brands. So I usually try to base samples off of that lately with more success than looking around on my own. The "hit" rate using ChatGPT has been pretty successful. Right now it is responsible for my second and Eighth ranked scents from two different houses I never have considered before. I would say I don't rely solely on ChatGPT, but like I said, it is a starting point. Then I do the usual research on reviews and find notes about that scent and decide to pull the trigger on a sample. Then, if I love it, I go back to ChatGPT and ask more similar like that. Since they are usually cheap enough, I might throw in a couple of wildcards to fill out the order if there is a threshold for free shipping or a discount or something. Just for fun. I'm usually good to throw in something odd from Imaginary Authors if they carry them which is always a wild ride for me it seems. I usually give the scent a chance by using the entire decant over the course of days or weeks until it is gone. If it doesn't wow me by then, it's a no buy. The ones I do bottle buy are the ones I get blown away by. I am more "lenient" with some houses than others when I do want to order more samples as I just vibe with certain ones. I am much more apt to order anything Rogue or Nicolai makes, but make a more calculated decision when it comes to Nishane or Fzotic. Hit rate to bottle buys are pretty low as my #2 rule is it has to blow me away on first wear. There's way too many fragrances out there that "good enough" is not "good enough" for a shelf spot.... but.... My hit rate to enjoying my samples I would say is really high, like 85+ precent. No joke. There's been very few that have been complete misses or tossers since I starting casually using ChatGPT. Currently, if my math is right, bottle buy is 20%.

... Hi, I'm from the United States and recently got into fragrances. Long story short (long story was a blog post), I used to taste bourbon and broke down notes in that. I quit drinking for now but missed the dedicated time to spend time with something and challenge myself to get notes and really examine something. Then came this hobby. The transfer was pretty seamless. I work overnights, so when I am off, I'll often times take different samples and spray one on each wrist and just spend time with each. Crazy? Maybe, but I love examining what these scents bring. Sniffing two different scents brings out the smells so much more I think when I really want to sit and work my senses. My bottles are meant for work, samples are meant for off nights. HAHA I have only been "collecting" for a few short months, but I very quickly found that I am, for lack of a better term, an old soul and dove into the deep end with the more old school-vintage styled fragrances out there (not the actual bottles from decades ago - just the brands that lean into making scents like those). I plan on exploring more. Currently on a Chypre kick. Anyways, I found this place and it seems super cool and hope to be a good contributor. I love reading the content that is already here.

Favorite Labels/Stampings/Engraving/Etc. on bottles

Perfume Discussions
... Piggybacking off of another thread with a twist: I saw a post about favorite bottle designs and I wanted to chime in about it but found I kept writing about the labels on the bottles and not the glassware itself, which is what I interpreted those posts to really be about. While I am not super interested in the actual bottle itself, I am quite a bit more interested in the designed label on the bottle regardless of what the bottle shape is. Two stick out in my mind. "The Cobra & The Canary | Imaginary Authors" for example is one. Not just The Cobra and The Canary, but all bottles from Imaginary Authors I think are cool as hell and super unique to each other telling the story of its fragrance. I am practically jealous I can't get into their scents more to have these interesting pieces of artwork on my shelf. I love sampling them, but just can't find one to bottle buy, yet. "Mousse Illuminée | Rogue" is another one. Again, not just this particular fragrance, but the whole design element that Rogue Perfumery uses. I could be super picky and say the caps feel cheap as hell and they are and it's just a sticker on the bottle and it is, but the label itself I so cool. I am a sucker for that "Roaring 20's" style artwork that they seem to use for their presentations. Each one unique enough to each other, instead of the same label with a different name. Does anyone else have an appreciation for your favorite designs as it regards to labeling/stamping/engraving/etc .?
