Do you ever blind buy? Or do you always test first?

Perfume Discussions
... At the beginning of this fragrance hobby, I used to blind buy A LOT!! I don't know if anyone else experience the same but when I started collecting fragrances, I would find a fragrance that I liked and then I would randomly blind buy most of its flankers. e.g. I think I had purchased every flanker of Black Opium but at the end, I got rid of all of them except the OG and Le Parfum... so much wasted money 馃槕 Same applied to a particular brand if I liked one fragrance from them. Now after 5yrs into the hobby, my blind buy to "previously tested/sampled" buy is like 1:4. I would blind buy if the notes look appealing, if the remind me section shows it leaning towards a fragrance I enjoy, if it's a brand most of whose fragrances I love/like and if it is available at a good price. Now that I bring in a lot of factors before I blind buy, the failure rate has gone down significantly. Typically I would not hesitate to blind buy from Armani Prive (I'm like a mega fan!馃槄), ROJA, Matiere Premiere if the notes already look appealing to me. Although I say that, my most recent blind buy failure was "Aoud Extraordinaire | Roja Parfums" 馃槀. It is not a bad fragrance but it's nowhere near the same level as other fragrances from ROJA.

Why put gender on it?
KeroFaria
|
Perfume Discussions
... The gender labeling is all marketing. Personally, I think fragrances are gender neutral and you can wear whatever scent you enjoy or connect with. I am a female and while I do enjoy my "feminine" fragrances, a.k.a. floral, fruity, gourmand, etc. I tend to lean more towards unisex fragrances. In the last 1-2 years, I have started to wear fragrances marketed towards men as well. I have a wide palate when it comes to fragrances and unless it is a note or combination of notes I dislike, I will wear whatever I'm in the mood for. Fragrances are also tied to smell association. I sometimes pull out certain "masculine" fragrances when I have an important meeting or formal event that day where I want to feel more confident in a professional (or even authoritative) way. Or when I go out for a date, I prefer to wear something a bit more floral or sweet because that's how I like to feel at the moment. I guess I went on a rant馃槄 but personally, I do not associate most fragrances with gender but I guess some people do not associate a manly man if they smell a sticky sweet floral or a bucket of sugar, just for example 馃槅

... I love burning some scented candles in the winter evenings, I find it really warm and cozy 鈽猴笍 I typically go for candles from fragrance houses rather than regular candle brands. I have a few candles from Roja, Tom Ford and Armani Prive and I hope to add some Diptyque and MKF candles this year 馃榿

Can Summer Heat Damage My Perfume Collection?
KeroFaria
|
Perfume Discussions
... The ideal condition for storing our fragrances would be in a dark closet with a bunch of silica gel packets thrown in there to absorb any humidity. But it's quite a hassle in my opinion. I used to store my fragrances with their original boxes in the closet until about 3yrs ago and put a few outside on a tray for a week or so and then change them. I realized later that a lot of my fragrances was never getting used because they were out of sight and taking them out spontaneously was a massive task. I had switched to storing them in open shelves in the last 3 yrs or so and I find I most of my fragrances get descent attention. I have my collection stored in two different shelves, one never faces the sunlight but the other one sometimes does if I have my curtains open (which I normally don't when the sunlight directly hits my shelf). So far I had no issues with any fragrance going bad. My oldest few bottles are roughly 5yrs old and the only change has been in the color of the liquid and in terms of the smell, if anything they have become richer over time. Granted, I don't live in a hot and humid country but we do get a few days of very hot summer days every year. Also I travel with my full bottles of perfumes, often during the Greek or Italian summer and even those have survived the high ambient temperatures. I would not store them in a cooler or a fridge because each time I take them out, they will experience significant temperature difference which is worse than storing them at a moderate room temperature. Purely based on my personal experience, I would say a brief period of high ambient temperature should not be an issue but a long term exposure will most likely damage / degrade the fragrance.

How do you all use your perfume decants and samples?
KeroFaria
|
Perfume Discussions
... Most of my samples and decants get left unused. I can put them in three different groups: 1. The ones I like instantly and get a full bottle soon after. Once I have my actual bottle, I prefer to wear the fragrance from the bottle than the decant because in my "weird" mind, the bottle is part of the fragrance wearing experience. 2. The ones I instantly dislike and I know I would not like them ever. I usually try to sell them, especially if they are samples from the brand/discovery set. 3. The ones I'm not very sure about and try multiple times. These are the ones that get used the most.

Do you wear fragrance to sleep? If so, which one(s)?

... Almost always. I change my fragrance 2-3 times everyday and the last one I spray usually an hour or two before bedtime. But I don't have specific fragrance or fragrances for bedtime, usually wear whatever I'm in the mood for 馃槈

Perfume Recommendations
... I love "Armani Priv茅 - Th茅 Yulong Gold Leaves | Giorgio Armani" , it's black tea, slightly smoky but also very fresh. Also "Gris Charnel (Eau de Parfum) | bdk Parfums" or "Gris Charnel (Extrait) | bdk Parfums" are great cozy black tea fragrances with creamy fig... more suitable for the cooler weather.

What are your favourite layering combos.
KeroFaria
|
Perfumes & Brands
... I usually layer sweet / gourmand fragrances with "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" and rarely wear the latter on its own. Layring with BR540 seems to increase the longevity of some weak performing fragrances in my experience, (a.k.a most Van Cleef fragrances 馃槖). Some of my favorite layering combos are "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" + "Bois Dor茅 | Van Cleef & Arpels" "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" + "Orchid茅e Vanille | Van Cleef & Arpels" "Ivory Route | Xerjoff" + "K'Bridge Club | Xerjoff" "Santal Pao Rosa | Guerlain" + "Oud Imperial (Eau de Parfum) | Perris Monte Carlo" "Crystal Saffron (Eau de Parfum) | Mati猫re Premi猫re" + "Gossip Night | Gritti"

What size of bottle do you prefer?
KeroFaria
|
Perfumes & Brands
... If it's a summer freshie, I tend to buy the bigger size bottle because I know I'm gonna bathe with that kind of fragrance 馃槀 As an over-sprayer, finishing a 50ml bottle is not a big challenge for me. That said, as my collection grows over time I find certain fragrances do not get used as often as others 鈽癸笍 As someone who travels a lot and always takes the actual bottle rather than decants , smaller bottles are easy to travel with. But sometimes, just because of pure aesthetics, I will buy the bigger bottle regardless of how often I might wear it.

Seeking Advice on Long-Lasting Summer Fragrances for Humid C
KeroFaria
|
Perfumes & Brands
... I come from a very hot and humid country in Asia, although I do not live there anymore. Whenever I visit, I notice my fragrances tend to disappear quicker than usual. If you spray on skin, the perfume evaporates off your skin faster in hot and humid weather and also due to perspiration. In general, I tend to spray on clothes than on skin where the scent sticks on the fabric for longer. Of course, that also depends on the color of the clothes and how sensitive they are. You don't want to ruin a white silk blouse by spraying a dark orange perfume 馃槄 On the other hand, citrus or aquatic scent in most cases are not long lasting due to the volatile nature of these fragrance compounds. There are a few exceptions though. Since you mentioned that you are new into fragrances, I wouldn't want to recommend anything too expensive. Based on your preference, I would recommend you to try these: "Ingenious Ginger | Goldfield & Banks" "Pacific Rock Moss | Goldfield & Banks" If you are interested in trying something outside citrus and aquatic scents but something that doesn't get cloying , you can try these: "Mon Guerlain Sparkling Bouquet | Guerlain" "Miss Dior Parfum | Dior" "Id么le | Lanc么me" "My Way (Eau de Parfum) | Giorgio Armani" I recommend these based on personal experience. Your experience or preference might be different.
