Make it last! Primer or moisturizer?
Johnjssmith

Perfume Discussions
... Moisturizer helps if you have quite dry skin, but aside from that rare case the way to make fragrances last longer is to carry a pocket/travel atomizer with you and re-apply during the day.

Do you believe in signatures?

Perfume Discussions
... I do, since a friend of mine at some point told me "you smell different from usual". Smell is the sense that evokes memories most strongly, so it makes sense that smelling the same way most of the time would help give an impression, and also give you an """aura""" of consistency and coherence even if you wear radically different outfits. That said, I personally have so many frangrances I like that I believe are suited for different occasions that it's hard to limit myself to just one, or even just a few, and at this point I guess I treat my scents more like I treat my clothes, and I'm happy when some people recognize I'm wearing a specific fragrance I wear in certain occasion.

What size of bottle do you prefer?
Johnjssmith

... 50ml aren't enough for me to feel like I can spray all I want, but more than 100ml can be a bit annoying to handle. So, either 75ml or 100ml.

What perfume have you bought recently?

... Viking by Abraaj/Fragrance World. It's just a classic, minty scent, nothing groundbreaking but perfect for an office setting with the coming of spring.

... Etat Libre d'Orange is worth a visit! I also read in a fragrantica review that the Van Cleef store in the (main?) Paris train station is the only place where they sell reissues of Tsar and Pour Homme, so that's worth a visit too if you're looking for classic scents.

Do you ever blind buy? Or do you always test first?

Perfume Discussions
... The most expensive fragrance I blind bought cost some €33, but after getting a handful of full bottles that I didn't really like, even though they were very cheap, I started sampling EVERYTHING before committing to more than a few ml. It's a bit of an expense at times, but it's definitely a good investment to be sure you're not throwing full-bottle-money away.

... I dread finishing a bottle and not having a fragrance I like so much anymore in case it gets discontinued, so I usually prefer 100ml bottles.

... You certainly don't have to be rich to wear anything. If you get the impression that wearing something won't make you feel good for any reason it's usually because of your tastes and biases, and if you feel confident and at ease wearing a fragrance you should just wear it.

Best Artistic niche incense fragrance?
Johnjssmith
|
Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... Depends on what kind of incense you're looking for. "Cardinal | Heeley" for example is the most realistic smokey frankincense-myrrh fragrance I tried, though you could argue it's a bit basic or two dimensional. "Armani Privé - Bois d'Encens | Giorgio Armani" isn't even a niche fragrance but it's my favorite soft incense, light, airy, a bit smokey, balsamic, and with a woody undertone that contrasts the airiness of the incense. "Casbah | Robert Piguet" is another favorite, it's more spicy and dirty compared to the incense you might find burned in churches, though it's not animalic-dirty, more like the resin being burned isn't too strong, so there's lots of impurities compared to the balsamic smell typical of incense. "Rien Intense Incense | Etat Libre d'Orange" is great if you want something that really smells niche, it smells like burning frankincense doused in diesel fuel. Aside from "Series 3: Incense - Kyoto | Comme des Garçons" I'm not a fan of the CDG Incense series, they're definitely more approachable and mass appealing compared to most recommendations in this thread, but only because they feature some notes that don't have much to do with incense, like the citrusy opening and the slightly ambery base of Avignon or the very cold cypress of Zagorsk. I should get around to trying "Ma Nishtana | Parfum Prissana"...

Gold

... I associate the "fake" amber accord with gold, or rather, with things made of gold rather than ingots. "Grand Soir | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" for example smells like a sumptuous palace decorated with gold and fine embroidered textiles. Or what I imagine it might smell at the very least 🙃

Affordable pine/woody recommendations?

... How smokey do you want it? "Arso | Profumum Roma" is great AND enormously smokey, though not cheap unfortunately. Or you can try "Pino Silvestre (Eau de Toilette) | Pino Silvestre", it's nothing special or very high quality but it does the job and is very cheap.

Fragrances improving with time?
Johnjssmith
|
Perfumes & Brands
... Most of the time people talk about things improving greatly because of maceration I get the sense that they just got used to the fragrance. I've certainly never found relevant differences between the same fragrance used even years apart. But memory isn't THAT accurate that it allows you to accurately remember such fine details about things you've only smelled a few times, regardless of what some people might think about their own memory, so it's easy enough that a poor memory is interpreted as a big change in smell.

... I've been using "Viking | Creed" lately because I got a few ml's of it, and I think a full bottle might be worth getting. I'm also considering "Beach Hut Man | Amouage", but today I'm going with Viking.

... The best solution to try out common enough fragrances is to start slow and get used to being nagged by salespeople and very politely telling them to fuck off(that you're just having a look and you'll call if you need anything). They're there to sell stuff but they mostly understand that some people just want to try things at their own pace. Plus in magazines you almost always find new fragrances, and you won't ever find classic and already well known fragrances like N°5 or Shalimar or what have you.
