EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members

|
Parfumo Community
... For me it was not exile but exodus: I left Fragrantica as soon as I found out about their politics... Which happened by reading a random perfume suggestion subreddit 🤣 But seriously, all their bigotry and especially them being pro-Putin and transphobic made it VERY personal for me, an anti-Putin Russian-born trans person. I will NOT be supporting this 🤬 Also, the website sucks, it's slow and barely usable (especially after the recent update lmao), their database is really not as good as they say (many niche perfumes are missing AND many discontinued scents are not marked as such). And the reviews are mediocre and mostly not informative at all... I also don't like it that only the admins are in control. As a user, you have no agency over your account whatsoever, you can't even delete it. Oh yeah, and if you look through more than like 10 perfumes in one minute, the website blocks you because they suspect that "you're scraping their data" 🙄 God forbid a person has interest in perfumes and is a fast reader 😂 I got blocked like a million times It sucks that that awful website is still the most well-known perfume resource, and newbies like me first go there because it's the first thing that we hear about... Hopefully it will change 🖤

Say hello and/or introduce yourself (if you like)

... Hi all, I'm new but I reviewed quite a few scents and posted some posts already, so I think I should introduce myself at this point 😀 Name's Val (they/he), I'm a computational biologist (career-wise), and a perfume aficionado (hobby-wise). I'm 30, and I live in Vienna, Austria (but originally I'm from Bashkortostan). I am actually very sensitive to many smells, sounds, and textures, so I never thought I would discover a passion for perfumes 😅 In fact, the vast majority of popular and designer fragrances always gave me massive migraines, so for most of my life I just assumed perfumery was not for me. But two years ago, something prompted me to buy a dupe of "Silver Mountain Water" by Creed (scent number 300 by the Essence Vault), which got me interested in citrus scents. Then I moved on to "your skin-but-better" scents. I had a Master's student at the time who wore perfumes, and she recommended that I try Commodity scents. So I did. This is how my journey into niche brands began 🖤 I never looked back. This summer, things between perfumes and me got real serious when I discovered Fishersund by stumbling upon their shop (I was walking around Reykjavik while I was there for a conference). I fell in love! 🖤 This new obsession had quickly snowballed into a full blown hyperfixation, and before I knew it, I owned a collection of samples, and even several bottles of niche perfumes. I had discovered I actually preferred darker and heavier perfumes, and moved on from citrus and skin-like scents. I initially created a profile on the *other* website, but once I learned about the owners and their bigotry, I left and searched for alternatives. And now I'm here, and I am very happy with the community here, people are nice and serious about perfumes. I respect that. 👍🏻

The scent you disliked the most.

... I am a someone who hates a lot of smells, and I never thought I would get into perfumery because of my sensitivity to smells... I dislike most mass&nbs p;market brands that use synthetics only, they all smell the same to me and give me migraines. So, I stick to niche and mostly botanical perfumes, at least I can handle them. I have a few examples of objectively good niche scents that I personally hated: Nudiflorum by Nasomatto made me gag and retch, I could not handle it... Something about the animalic notes they got in there mixed with (what I think is) raspberry just makes my stomach turn. After smelling it, I cannot deal with any perfumes that contain leather and raspberry 😕 Just thinking about it makes me nauseous. A second perfume that ruined another combination of notes for me is Mistpouffer by Stora Skuggan. I cannot even contemplate ever smelling something with pine and sugar in it after getting acquainted with Mistpouffer. It just smells like hangover breath and cheap pine cologne to me... And the last but not least, it's 46th street by Gravel. Same issue as with Nudiflorum - leather and berry combination, makes me nauseous. Also very smoky and smells like burning piss🤢 Again, these scents (well, at least Nudiflorum and Mistpouffer) are well-done and well-liked, I am just writing my experiences to illustrate that sometimes hating a scent comes down to having a visceral irrational reaction to it 😅 One of my favorite perfumes is from Stora Skuggan (Hexensalbe), yet another one is on this list...

TOSKOVAT OPINION (FR & ENG translated)
valhelsingv
|
Perfume Discussions
... I am someone who likes Toskovat' scents but I also would advise against buying them :D If you can get small decants, they're fun to sample, and I like them. My favorites are is My Past Selves' Flowers and Take Me To Church, and I would get a second-hand bottle of one of them theoretically (if the price is right)... However, I agree that the perfumer's attitude is off-putting. It's giving "pretentious hipster with a man-bun" (he also happens to look the part :D). Also, dropping extremely limited batches and then discontinuing those fragrances is just artificially creating "shortage" to make people feel like they're missing out and to make them buy overpriced scents. And by overpriced, I mean, OVERPRICED (as of recently). As I mentioned, I like Take Me To Church, I think it's a very good heavy church incense scent. Of course, it got discontinued. This year, it was re-released under a different name "Domus Nomeni", and the bottle now costs over twice as much! 600 Euro! No perfume is worth this much money! And I can spend over 100 euro on a 30 ml bottle if I love the scent, but these prices are too much even for me. Obnoxious and ridiculous! Full disclaimer, I take no issue with self-taught perfumers, and the Toskovat' guy is pretty good as a perfumer (in my opinion). However, his attitude will be his undoing. I am not really familiar with his drama regarding Ataraxia, but I heard a little bit and sounds like it's just drama for the sake of more drama and attention to me.

Perfumes on Vinted : Are they scams ?
valhelsingv
|
Perfume Discussions
... I've been selling and buying samples and decants on Vinted for over a year, and normally, it's ok. However, I'd advise against buying what seems a brand new sealed full bottle. Even if there is a correct batch code. I got scammed twice for the same perfume (L'Orpheline by Serge Lutens), both times the bottle was original, but it didn't smell like anything but alcohol (I know what the original L'Orpheline smells like, I owned it before and still have decants of it). I did have success with buying an open bottle of perfume, though (Sancti by Liquides Imaginaires). I think the bottles that are not full have higher chances of being real, scammers normally try to pass their dupes off as "brand new perfumes". Always get a sample of the perfume first (preferably not from Vinted) so you know what the real thing smells like. Oh, yeah, and steer clear of listings of popular brands like Tom Ford, those are 99% fake.

Seeking a masculine rose scent with strong life

Perfume Recommendations
...Not sure if any of these would come even remotely close to what you're looking for (as I personally cannot tell when a scent is masculine or feminine; also I don't know if any of them would last as long as you would like), but these are the rose scents that I find not flowery or soft: Serpent by Vapormundum Bloody Wood by Liquides Imaginaires Rose Fantome by LVNEA Triad by Bortnikoff (only if you like oud) La Fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens Amnesia Rose by Aedes de Venustas Spice Must Flow by ELDO Serpent lasts over 12 hours on my skin easily

... If you're still looking, Saringkarn by Prin is a somewhat different take on oud-rose combo, and it's very well-done, in my opinion.

Perfume Recommendations
... https://www.woodberg.de/ offers samples of each of the scents they sell. https://www.7scents.hu/ also sells decants. also, not a website but @ scented.obscura on instagram is my go-to for all Serge Lutens needs (incl. rare and discontinued scents); I bought from them 3 or 4 times already.

... I have some suggestions that are not sweet: Dirty Vanilla by Heretic and Carbonara by Lorenzo Pazzaglia. Dirty Vanilla is very woody, and Carbonara is almost savory somehow.

Perfume Recommendations
... If you're looking for scents in the same family as ELDO Ghost in the Shell, I can recommend Dent de Lait by Serge Lutens, it's milky and metallic but colder than GitS. Also, Dawn Whispers by L'Entropiste might work.

Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... I can see Pineward was already recommended, so I will add other ones: Blood Cedar by Heretic, it's dry pine woods on a sunny day Forêt Dormante , Holy Oak , Ghost Pine by LVNEA Both Heretic and LVNEA are nearly 100% botanical perfumes with little to no synthetic materials (I am also sensitive to synthetics that's why I like these brands)
