Snake Head Love
The aggressive snake head design of the bottle is 80s to the core, but this isn't what I'm wired to consider an uber masculine powerhouse.

The opening is all about an aldehydic rose and jasmine taming the animalic honey accord. In the dry-down oakmoss and patchouli appear to help keep the musk and civet in check, which they do beautifully. There are dozens of notes in this that my nose couldn't possibly pick up. There is an element of sweetness in Iquitos, but it is pleasant without ever becoming cloying.

Projection is very good in the first hour and a half, and longevity is good on my skin. I also have the aftershave and its performance is way above average by aftershave standards. Such quality is highly unusual in a celebrity fragrance - the only other one I enjoy and own is Pavarotti For Men. Well worth the hype.

Masculinity Level: Tony Montana after hitting it big, before his inevitable downfall.

The Great 80s Strike Again...
Iquitos goes on with a honeyed rose and a hint of supporting mandarin orange before quickly moving to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the rose takes over as the focus with the honeyed aspect receding though still quite present, revealing its slightly powdery facet as a moderately animalic musk and civet duo join fine white floral jasmine and mossy green oakmoss from the base providing significant support. During the late dry-down the animalics and rose all but vacate, leaving remnants of the now dry honey to join with a slightly sweet amber and sandalwood tandem with leather support through the finish. Projection is very good, as is longevity at around 11-12 hours on skin.

As most masculines from the 80s were winners, I guess it shouldn't be a great surprise that Iquitos is another fine example of the period's amazing output. The composition is a animalic honeyed rose at its core, but the oakmoss within adds an element to the composition that just couldn't be replicated easily in today's IFRA regulated world, making one appreciate just how good things were back then. While it has been quite a while since I have worn it, for some reason I feel like there is a similarity to Oscar de la Renta pour Lui here, and if so, that is far from a bad thing. Similar or not, Iquitos smells superb regardless. The bottom line is the discontinued $340 per 100 ml bottle on the aftermarket Iquitos may not prove the best smelling masculine of the great 80s, but that title is not necessary to still claim an "excellent" 4 stars out of 5 rating and a strong recommendation to vintage perfume collectors.

Paris, Brut in Gallic attempt on Dandy
Art & Fragrance have issued a 'lovely' sweet soft floral for men on behalf of the French actor Alain Delon.

Even though the drydown is more conventional Iquitos still flouts the gender code.
Would the perfumer responsible make themself known to the authorities.

Iquitos is a rubber tapping city in Peru.

Unusual for men
You can't immediately tell that this is a masculine scent. Especially because honey comes to the fore in the beginning. And because of this, Iquitos is very similar to Climat from Lancome. I didn’t even immediately understand when rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and lily of the valley replaced honey. After such an influx of sweets, what remains is sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver. And for a long time the perfume will echo with the aromas of moss and leather. Honestly, at the beginning and middle you can’t tell that this is a masculine scent.

Versatile
I'll tell u this. Even though it was launched in 1987 during the nuclear age of perfumerie, this is not what I'd call a big time smash mouth masculine monster. What it is is a smooth creamy sleek masculine with very subtle feminine touches that surface every now and then. Make no mistake this is a MAN'S scent it's just a much more modern, sleek, mature and silky smooth offering from Alain Delon and it's simply beautiful and glorious and it also truly has a beginning middle and end with the base being the highlight of the fragrance. I'm not sure if it's worth the almost $300.00 I paid for it but boy is this a work of art. There's NOTHING on the shelves today that can even come close.

A clean-dirty classic from 80's that smells like a dandified Kouros with added big dose of rose and sweet fruits.
