What does Oud actually smell like?
At least I have never sniffed a pure Oud extract. Therefore, I can't say how "authentic" the scent really is.
(In the few oud-containing fragrances I've smelled so far, the likely Oud note smells somehow indefinably musty and is usually masked with flowers)
Individual scent notes are hard to determine here, but the overall impression is woody-spicy-vegetal-leathery. The main note smells exactly like the vegetable crate in an African shop near me, where okra pods are always lying, along with a somewhat chaotic but slightly stale jumble of spices. This scent has always fascinated me, and I've always wondered what smells so good - maybe someone is spraying Oud perfume around there :P
In any case, the scent reminds me at first of many beautiful free days when I wandered around the shop and aimlessly bought things like okra, sweet potatoes, plantains, and fenugreek, only to later search the internet for recipes with a question mark over my head :)
The vegetal-earthy aspect of the scent somehow reminds me of potatoes. A pine-board-like wood note and a bit of patchouli are also present, but rather subtle.
Only later does a restrained tea rose join in, and the whole scent turns leathery. But not a soft, "clean" leather scent, rather dark and somewhat smoky. A bit reminiscent of Dita's "Erotique." Towards the end, the note that I assume to be Oud makes another appearance. It becomes autumnal. Damp leaves, rain, leather jackets, and boots. Thunderstorms, warm fireplace, fabric softener, and patchouli. Is it already over? What a shame... :(
--------------
Conclusion: The scent becomes really beautiful once you get past the okra crate, potato, and spice bazaar notes. Unfortunately, it doesn't last particularly long afterwards (5 hours on clothing - well, there are more long-lasting options in this price segment), and somehow something is missing. I don't know what, I'm not a perfumer ;) but somehow it feels a bit flat in between. Ohdeberlin is right about that ^^
I don't smell anything fecal or sweaty here at all. If I hold my nose in really deep, I can at most imagine a very slightly indolic jasmine note.
Especially because of the poor longevity, this could become my next autumn everyday scent - if I want to annoy my fellow humans with my usual floral clubs only in the evening :P
