Isn't this the same as Girlfriend?
Justin Bieber SOMEDAY, like the dozens--if not hundreds--of celebrity and clothing designer scents apparently sourced from the very same vat, suffers, logically enough, from the same defect. These are light floriental (not fruity floral) pseudo-sandalwood/vanillin-based compositions which initially smell fine but degrade rather rapidly, at least on my skin, ultimately revealing the cheapness of their ingredients over the course of a wear.

Given the popularity of this formula (and its many, many variants) there are obviously people out there whose skin is more amenable to this sort of fragrance, but on me they never really seem to work and end up smelling stale. Désolée.

A Fantastic Starter Fragrance for the Younger Ones
Whilst I wouldn't call myself a fan of Justin Bieber, He is certainly smart with following the route of many other celebrities with creating his first signature fragrance dedicated to his fan-base. I have two younger sisters and we live in the U.S where Bieber fans are everywhere. They're like a hive of bees, say something wrong about Justin and they'll attack you. I couldn't help but wonder though- would they appreciate this perfume that has been dedicated to them or would they buy into it simply because of the name on the pretty bottle?

I sniffed this because I had to. I had to smell what Justin thought would smell nice on a girl and I wasn't surprised. I was actually quite disappointed but then again- this fragrance is not targeted at me, its targeted at a very young, female audience and when i tried to put myself in their shoes, it all of a sudden appeared to me that this would be their idea of the perfect scent.

But what initially disappointed me about this fragrance was that it seems more like a mash-up of different celebrity fragrances which are already on the market. It has an incredible sweetness to it which is backed up by what smells like a very fresh floral bouquet. Its all very standard stuff- not anything ground breaking but its very well suited to its target audience.

I bought a bottle each for my two sisters and they quite enjoy it despite its crappy staying power, but i'm quietly waiting for them to ditch their celebrity scents and then come on over to something more sophisticated and dynamic. Here's Hoping. :)

I'm NO fan of Beiber but this is great stuff.
Enough lecturing, this is a sweet slightly bitter floral fragrance. In the top i get pear, but not the meat of the pear. More like the skin on the pear, with just some of the juices left over, the sweetness i get from this note is slightly green. Also in the top i get the juicy raw glucose scent from the red berry note (challenge for you, how many red berries can you name off in 30 secs?).

Now to the middle. The jasmine, which smells like a more toned down powdery version of the jasmine you'll find in Alien. Very nice, and executed well, the jasmine could have easily overpowered the entire composition. Also in the middle we have Floral notes(I get a creamy honeysuckle, almost a sun-kissed vibe).

Lastly in the base we have what they call musk, but, i'd be inclined to say that it is actually white musk. Which as most of you will know, white musk is a much softer sweeter, more synthetic musk scent. It would surprise me if it WASN'T white musk. And obviously alongside the white musk we have Vanilla to finish the fragrance into a creamy sweet, slightly floral aromatic.

This is a great fragrance, i had my sister smell it without knowing what it was and she was IN LOVE (she hates the Beiber).

:ADD ON: The dry-down

(After a few hours of it sitting on my hand is has turned essentially into that raw surgery glucose scent, with a whiff of velvety honeysuckle. Simply gorgeous.)

Nothing New Under the Sun
This is a case in point of one of the sadder types of perfume - the celebrity fragrance.
These perfumes do well because of the cachet of the celebrity and their draw, but also because of the skilled commercial perfumers behind them - like Honorine Blanc, creator of Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum, Black Opium Eau de Parfum and Idôle.

Honorine Blanc, in an interview I listened to from The Perfume Room, mentions that she is fascinated with addiction. Creating something addictive through her perfumes - a fluffy cotton-candy texture, a fresh glowy sweetness. She is a clever perfumer who created the iconic smells of the early 2000s to 2010s, and is still creating to this day. What is more addictive and nostalgic than the candies of our childhood?

The perfume is representative of that age group was expected to want. 14-18-year-old girls, mostly in the Anglosphere. A vanilla fruity-floral with a fresh youthfulness and happiness, no challenges.
The stakeholders involved, having spent so much money on their celebrity product, their marketing, and their master perfumer, do not want to drive the customer away from the store by presenting anything challenging. And so the final product has been blind-tested multiple times to make sure it is inoffensive to everyone, and there is absolutely nothing going on behind it.

It's a good piece of commercial perfumery, but it's more worthy as a case study. This kind of repetitive creativity is what we get in a world where money determines what types of art gets made. Not really bad art, just all the same.
The type of innovation that capitalism breeds is usually just endless variations on a theme of what sells - and what sells is also decided for us by what's available and the scents we link to our feelings. So we go round and round and there's never anything new.

It's been over ten years and most women's perfume still smells like this.

Opens with tart mandarin orange and other sweet fruits. That continues on, forever, into a pretty haze of sweet flowers and vanilla.

I caught the 'Bieber Fever' and an asthma attack shortly ensued.
Well I certainly haven't got 'Bieber Fever', and I'm far too old to find Justin Bieber even remotely attractive, so when this widely anticipated fragrance hit my local stores last month, I didn't find myself jumping up and down with uncontrollable teenage joy. However, I must admit it did pique my curiosity.

First of all, the bottle seems to be a blatant rip-off of Marc Jacobs Lola. Even the plastic flower lid is similar. And surprise, surprise, even the scent has its similarities to Lola's sweet, fruity muskiness.

The scent is surprisingly strong. I really hope young teen girls don't spray this fragrance in abandon, I really feel sorry for their parents and the schoolteachers if they do. The scent seems to be a slightly chemical blend of strawberry jam, candied orange, musky vanilla and plastic flowers. This fragrance makes me wheeze a little bit, so be warned asthmatics, it's not the most lung-friendly fragrance.

Someday will surely be a best seller amongst his fans, and had I been perhaps five years younger, this fragrance may have appealed to me too. Maybe even Justin Bieber himself would have been 'hot-stuff' in my 17 year old eyes. Unfortunately to a woman well into her twenties, Someday is disregarded as juvenile and silly.

Well, it's not a sexy scent that's for certain, but I guess you could call it flirtatious with all those sweet, candied fruits. Needless to say it smells the way a young girl should smell, innocent, girly and sweet.
