CRY, BABY! FROM STRAWBERRY DREAM TO FRUITY GENERIC...
I have the original bottle. This perfume is going to be re-released in September 2025 on the official site, and I’m curious how it’s going to compare. Supposedly, the notes will stay the same and the fragrance hasn’t been changed. So, what does the original vintage Cry Baby smell like?
First things first, I tried to revise the notes here, but the research team wouldn’t let me. I feel the official note pyramid from Melanie’s website is more accurate because I really can’t smell any lipstick or baby lotion; that’s just a marketing gimmick. The actual notes are pretty accurate:
Top: Milk, Strawberry, Forest Fruits
Middle: Powdery Notes
Base: Caramel, Woody Notes
This pyramid makes a lot more sense. It opens with a burst of strawberry and creamy milk, but that stage is short-lived — about 15–20 minutes. Then other fruits start to overshadow the strawberry, and a little powder starts to peek through. It smells like those candy necklaces or candy bracelets dusted with sugar. If you had them as a kid, it’s very nostalgic.
Again, I don’t detect any cosmetic or lotion notes — just sweet berry. It stays that way until the drydown, where a hint of woods emerges in the base. Very subtle. The overall quality is similar to something from Bath & Body Works — it even smells like something they’d sell, maybe a fruity body spray with a vanilla base. If I did a blind test, I’d probably guess Bath & Body Works.
I wish the milky strawberry opening lasted longer, because once it fades, the drydown loses its originality and leans fruity-generic. Honestly, it’s not worth the price unless you’re a Melanie fan or a merch collector.
The bottle, though? Adorable. I love everything about it. It’s well made, and my favorite detail is the baby-bottle-style cap and the gradient on the back that shows the perfume level: “Happy,” “Running Low,” and “Dead.” Then, when you unscrew the lid, the silver letters on top say “FU*K OFF.” I’m living for this packaging. Kitschy, but I don’t own another bottle that’s so aesthetically different and stands out this much. Haha!
