The Memories of a Visitor in the "Old Palace"

Morning mood with slightly damp cool air. The city is still quiet. And it will remain so in the small side street where the mysterious "Old Palace" stands. It dates back to the time of the "Enlightenment" and is built in a mix of styles that includes both classical-antique elements and, in some places, Rococo-like decorative features. Could the architects not decide here? Or was it done intentionally? I don't know. And it’s not really that important. The garden, which I am now approaching through a wrought-iron gate, already speaks volumes visually and olfactorily. Although it is somewhat overgrown. Various mints and lemon balms grow here, "wild geranium," thyme, and other herbs. Tall, old cedars cast everything in green-shaded light. This enhances the mysterious impression even more.
And what might it look like inside the slightly "quirky" building? As far as I know, it houses a library and a permanent exhibition of research and achievements from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
In a quarter of an hour, it will open; I read this on the oak wood gate that leads inside.
Meanwhile, I stroll through the palace garden, where I discover quite a few interesting things. A small pond, bordered by irises and moisture-loving grasses. A stone figure that has settled down sitting in the grass.
Now it is time to go inside and see everything there. I am greeted by slightly dusty air that smells of "old books." That’s the lignin from the wood they were made from. Shelves full of folios and scientific treatises. Among other things, volumes of poetry and plays by Schiller, Goethe, M. Claudius, and also about Goethe's "new" insights into color theory. Herbaria, with dried plant parts neatly arranged behind glass. Also, old rose varieties, preserved for "eternity," are among them. Doesn’t a delicate scent escape from the exhibits? I almost want to believe it. A hearty-fine blend of various woody, powdery, and floral aromas.
I linger for an hour or two, enjoying all the interesting "old stuff" and almost picturing a life in those times.
Then I turn back to the garden. A bench between cedars, the pond, and the herb garden invites me to stay :-))
