The memories of a visitor to the "old palace"
Morning mood with slightly damp, cool air. It is still quiet in the city. And it will stay that way in the small side street where the mysterious "Old Palace" stands. It dates back to the "Enlightenment" period and is built in a mix of styles, containing both classical-antique elements and, in some places, rococo-style decorative elements. Were the architects unable to make up their minds here? Or was it deliberately built this way? I don't know. And it's not that important. The garden, which I now approach through a wrought-iron gate, speaks volumes both visually and olfactorily. Although it is a little overgrown. All kinds of mint and lemon balm, "wild geranium", thyme and other herbs grow here. Tall, old cedars make everything appear in a green, shady light. This adds to the mysterious impression.
And what might it look like inside the slightly "quirky" building? As far as I know, it houses a library and a permanent exhibition of research and achievements from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
It will open in a quarter of an hour, I read it on the oak gate that leads inside.
In the meantime, I stroll through the palace garden, where I discover a few more interesting things. A small pond, lined with irises and moisture-loving grasses. A stone figure sitting on the grass.
Now it's time to go inside and look at everything there. I am greeted by slightly dusty air that smells of "old books". That's the lignin from the wood they were made of. Shelves full of folios and scientific treatises. Among others, volumes of poetry and stage plays by Schiller, Goethe, M. Claudius and also about Goethe's "new" findings on color theory. Herbaria, the dried plant parts neatly lined up behind glass. There are also old rose varieties, preserved for "eternity". Isn't there still a delicate fragrance wafting from the exhibits? I can almost believe it. A hearty, delicate mixture of all kinds of woody, powdery and floral aromas.
I linger for an hour or two, enjoying all the interesting "old stuff" and almost vividly imagining life in those days.
Then I turn my attention back to the garden. A bench between the cedars, pond and herb garden invites me to linger :-))
