Best Supporting Role
If I could award a fragrance Oscar for the most convincing supporting role in a rose perfume, I would give it to … (drumroll) THE GERANIUM!

Whenever (or almost always) a fragrance successfully captures the lifelike, sweet-tart scent of the rose, in my opinion, there is a distinct touch of geranium at play. It boosts the rose sweetness and rounds it off with an incredibly rosy bitterness that is simply irresistible.

Geranium itself has a very herb-sweet, rose-like scent, and in combination with real rose, it gives the queen of flowers a diva-like, pompous, glamorous appearance. A truly brilliant supporting actor!

This is also true in “Nostalgie des Roses.” Similarly beautiful, as in the case of “Velvet Rose” by Anglia Perfumery or “Elisabethan Rose” by Penhaligon's, it manages here, with the help of geranium, to capture the perfect rose opulence without kitsch and soapiness. The orange peel, chamomile, and lemon are so skillfully used that they simply contribute to the perfect rose madness: Individually, they are hardly detectable unless you know they are included.

This is how rose should be, dear noses!

As so often, I owe this exquisite rose enjoyment to dear Florblanca.

...is a very well-known and widely spread rose variety. It is at home in many gardens. It is relatively hardy, has large, full, yellow flowers that gradually transition to a rosy-orange, and emits a strong fragrance.

The scent of this rose reminds me of Nostalgie des Roses by Angana. I can definitely smell the essential oils of the orange peel and also the softness of chamomile and the fine citrusy geranium at the outset. Yet throughout, the rose is present, fully bloomed and at the peak of its fragrance diffusion.

The scent is sweet, but only as sweet as the flowers themselves. Despite the various components, I perceive Nostalgie des Roses as a soliflore. Later, a fine and light powderiness emerges, while at the same time, the scent is distinctly more citrusy directly on the skin - and only there. Interesting!

The sillage is exceptionally good, as is the longevity. Angana fragrances are largely composed of natural components and therefore do not possess the finesse of great perfumes. They cannot compete with the fragrances of Les Parfums de Rosine. But they are definitely worth a try.
