My Signature Scent in 2021
A thyme-rosemary-basil-oakmoss bomb of a chypre, with lavender and a pleasant clove. The dry-down reveals a good dose of leather and some patchouli. It's a delightful manly herbal fragrance - the bottle I reached out for most in 2021.

Projection and longevity are very good. It's hard to believe this used to sell for €10 in drugstores. Basile must have been the best bottom-of-the-barrel brand in the 80s. Steer clear of the current Basile Uomo Intense as it's a bad One Million clone.

Masculinity Level: John Rambo in the forest being hunted down by the sheriff in First Blood, before the character became a caricature.

Accidentalmente
This bottle came into my possession by chance. I had ordered Basile for women (Basile Femme) and I got this as there was a small bar-code sticker with "Basile for women" on the box, even though the box itself says very clearly in big letters "BASILE UOMO" (uomo is Italian for man), but then you can not expect everyone knowing Italian.

Luckily the company I ordered it from has great costumer service and I could also keep it, so after smelling it it got a place in my collection. It is quite a herbal chypre (I would classify it as herbal also, if that was in the classification list), starting with a green blast of herbs which I can not all identify but the basil seemed most noticeable; I checked with the basil pot at the kitchen window. Oakmoss is very strong here and gives a cool forest feeling. After five, six hours leather is also noticeable, but subdued to the oakmoss. I guess that the other notes round Basile up and hold the dominant notes together without showing up front.

Basile uomo can very well be worn by women if they like their chypre green, herbal and strong. It is great for everyday and business, it goes well with jeans or business suits and is a good match for summer days.

The top two shirt buttons are undone, the gold chain glimmers...
My goodness, I certainly have a penchant for bold fragrances, but this opening takes my breath away. Spicy, soapy, and dark green, Basile Uomo starts off with a mossy, earthy color palette dominating the scene with great determination. A hint of honey adds a rather restrained sweetness, and the otherwise very compact army of citrus defenders is fighting a rather lost cause.

I don't want to resort to clichés here, but the first half of the scent's development clearly favors those among us who are naturally blessed with a strong chest hair and stride through life sun-kissed with an open collar. I say this completely neutrally, but a subtle appearance doesn't seem really feasible with this fragrance.

It takes a good while for the strict spiciness to settle down, allowing individual components from the scent wall to become more distinguishable. I was able to identify rosemary, thyme, and lavender, as well as a very distinctive cinnamon note, which I found quite appealing.

Overall, I would like to ascribe slightly anachronistic traits to our friend. For my taste, it is somewhat too coarse over long stretches, and pleasing nuances are not its strength. This is all the more regrettable, as there are indeed very successful examples of a strong presence paired with the necessary style. I would like to mention the green Polo or Santos by Cartier here.

Thus, Basile Uomo ultimately remains reserved for the Tom Selleck/Magnum Nimbus, which I find quite charming, but over time also somewhat one-dimensional.

Basil can do much more than basil
What a rarely beautiful start, bright and lively. Green in all shades, marbled with citrus yellow and lavender lilac - the citrusy and the herbal, cool and warm notes, light and dark dance around and elevate each other like Yin and Yang.

After a quarter of an hour, the scent becomes calmer, but by no means boring. Clove, nutmeg, and galbanum form a bright triad with a wealth of overtones. Up close, it smells spicy-resinous, while in projection, fine menthol accents unfold. No trace of flowers or berries. After an hour, the perfume becomes softer and earthier. Cinnamon joins in, but not the sweet-gourmand Ceylon cinnamon from the shaker, rather thick-barked cassia cinnamon from the jungle.

The enjoyment lasts for two hours until oak moss and sandalwood set in, and the scent gradually fades away, friendly, completely without leather and patchouli. It is still good, but compared to the spectacular beginning, the ending is rather inconspicuous. (This may be due to my skin.)

A fragrance for all seasons, quite cooling in summer. Multifaceted and balanced, but not pleasing: for noses that only know modern perfumes, it is certainly too demanding.

Fresh, Green, Spicy Italian Complexity
A rarity, the "Basile uomo". In online searches, it is only painstakingly available in Germany. Thanks to Cappellusman, who warmly recommended it to me, I was able to test this 27-year-old Italian.

Typically Italian, I can sign that blindly. Mind you, this characteristic really applies (almost) only to niche Italians these days.

The standard department store fragrances from the big labels (Armani, Versace, Gucci, Prada) over the last decade rather indicate a stylistic sell-out or a bankruptcy of what used to be Italian quality in the perfume sector.

"Basile uomo" once again shows what was still possible "back then" in terms of naturalness, harmony of ingredients, masculinity, understatement, and recognizability.

At the beginning, the scent reminds me of a darker, more aromatic "Armani Eau pour homme": a green-spicy start, a lot of fresh basil alongside slightly bitter lemon and orange, interspersed with thyme and rosemary notes.

Invigorating, without (as is often the case today) being a cheap, clumsy fruit basket shower with artificial cocktail additives (most recently experienced in a terrible way with "Boss Bottled Unlimited").
It is masculine without much frills or fuss, rather a stylish understatement.

The fragrance develops further into a fresh-green, gently bitter spectrum, which in the heart phase gains subtly sweet cinnamon elements. It is always impressive how carefully it was ensured in the 80s that the individual ingredients were coordinated and harmonized.

Nutmeg adds a delicate, slightly dry-spicy accent, while perfectly balanced fresh-green resinous galbanum, minimally spicy clove, soft floral rose, and subtly fruity currant merge together.

Nothing stands out unpleasantly or dominates.

The base is classically 80s, a very gentle green-woody-leathery triad.
Longevity is extraordinarily good, as it was done back then. Somewhere between 80 and 90% is to be expected.

There could be many today... oh, how often should I write this like a mantra? I am tired of it. :-)

The homeopath among fragrances. It's good, but "close to the skin" is a euphemism in this case. Where did it go? Poof, gone. Another durability trauma.

Herb and green! If it hadn't come out after Paco, one could call it its big brother.

Delightfully spicy "Waldkauz" with lots of sunshine shining through green treetops. Patterns on moss and herbs painted on the bright clearing. TOP!!

Graphite-like acidity, a hint of freshness, and loads of herbs. The scent surprised and thrilled me right away. I must have it!
